Hi there Diane and welcome to this board. What type of rainbows do you have? I currenly have 4 rainbows two dwarf rainbows and two australian rainbows. The rainbow fish are a great look to any tank. They like a ph of 5.5 to 8.0 depending on the type of rainbow you have. For example some of the Melanotaeia family (not sure on the spelling of that) which come from Australia and Papua New Guinea are at best health at a ph of 5.5 to 6.0, but most other rainbows should do fine with a neutral ph. They are omnivorous and eat flake food, frozen and live. They also like to be kept in schools and like a planted tank but leave a open space for them to swim around because they are very lively swimmers. Best temp is 72-79. I have kept rainbows with hatchets, swordtails, corycats, bala sharks to name a few. Overall they are great fish to keep. Hope you enjoy them.

Thank you for the warm welcome.
As of now I do not have any rainbows but wanted to get some. I currently have 4 zebra and 2 spotted danios, 2 swordtails, 1 irridescent shark and 4 corys. I also wanted to get some barbs as well as the rainbows. What rainbows do you think would be best for my tank? Thanks, Diane

Well the Dwarf Rainbows that I have are good or the Madagascar Rainbows are good also. Really they are all good with the exception of a few that I talked about before. The LPS where I live has never had the ones which like the 5.5 ph they are quite rare. You were talking about getting Barbs if you were thinking about getting Tiger Barbs you will want to keep them in a school of 6-8 or more. They are "Fin Nippers" and keeping them in groups will turn them away from other fish a little. If you get the Rainbows I promise you will not be dissapointed. They are a blast to watch and keep. Let me know what you get.

I've read 'bows come from different types of water (PH-wise), but adapt well to basically anything you give them. As for compatibility, they are said to get along fine with other fish the same size. My 'bows have been kept with Corys, Plecos, Zebra Danios & Red Eye Tetras with absolutely no bullying or harrassing behavior what-so-ever.
I've had Dwarf Neons, Bosimanis, Goydor River, Aussie & New Guinea Reds all without a problem in the world. They are best kept in schools. Just about all of the varieties from Australia and Paupa New Guinea grow 4-6" in length (the Dwarf Neon only grows to 2-2 1/2"). A very useful site: Rainbowfish On-line. A good book: Rainbowfish Complete Owner's Manual. Thus far my favorite Rainbow kept has been the Goydor River. If you are intrested in some varieties of Rainbowfish not found locally, check out aquabid.com and look under Rainbowfish. There is a seller there (rarefishatlax I think is his ID) that has some "new" fish not found in the States yet. Have fun!!! John
