Yes, I've kept both. Digging isn't a problem provided you have plenty of "safe" zones. Areas that offer lots of cover with caves. rocks, and my favorite...branchy driftwood with lots of Java Fern attached so as to create several hidey holes. Cacatouides are spectacular, but their temperament is not predictable...I ended up with a single pair in a 55G with only a rubberlip pleco being tolerated as a tankmate. Certainly they were and are worth any problems. Watching even a single pair in a heavily planted tank...it simply doesn't get any better. I've recently set up another 75G, as soon as the tank matures (about 6 months) the current inhabitants will be moved to other tanks and a pair of A. cacatuoides "Orange Flash" will be the star attractions.

Well there are certainly plenty of safe areas in my tank, but I don't want to have to sit in front of my tank and watch them chase each other in and out of all these hiding places all day. I used to keep African Cichlids and they were more stress than relaxation because I'd keep worrying that they'd kill each other (and they often would).
I don't know if I want the aggressive actions of breeding going on in this tank. I might try to breed these things someday, but in a different tank. I might just get a few male Triple red Cacutoides and that's it. What do you mean that the rubberlip pleco was the only tolerated tankmate? What other fish were unsuccessful as tankmates?

I have several triple red Cacutoides in most of my tanks now, mainly due to a very eager breeding pair but I have to say that they do look absolutely fantastic when they are displaying to each other.
they seem to be the least aggressive dwarf I have ever kept generally too lazy to chase anything too far so even my corys are safe when they are spawning. I have yet to see any digging by the male as that apears to take effort which is something they reserve for spawning. when I was keeping agazzi I found them to be very agressive towards other tank mates |
