What's wrong with me!
so my swordtail has been pregnant twice now. Each time, I turn the powerfilter down to a trickle as not to suck up the fry, then she gets skinnier, so I figure, hey she did it and they must all be dead. A while after that, I turn the filter back up, and a few days later I see 1-2 fry!!! What is with my timing! (Just had to rant about it for a while to some one)

In expectation of fry, add a sponge pre-filter to the intake of your power filter. This can be done by simply purchasing a Aquaclear sponge ( for a aquaclear mini filter, for example) and cutting it to size , cutting a small hole and slipping it over the strainer of your intake. You could actually keep that on even when your fish doesn't seem pregnant if you wanted to. This should fix any " timing" issues as it pertains to turning down the flow of your filter. One less thing to worry about, eh.

Agreed with Jake here, a prefilter would prevent this problem from happening too much. Or at the very least they will be stuck to the prefilter and you can see what happened to them.

The only thing is the filter won't pick up the larger pieces of detrius and plant matter. But I guess that's better than sucking up fry eh?

I've also got to start checking the tank several times a day and remove the mother as soon as she's done. As well, I didn't remove the father, so I'll bet you he just followed her, eating them up
I saw the fry, or maybe a different one(?), today and it looked very young, within a couple of days at most, and the mother seems kinda fat still, so I'm trying the breeding trap for up to a day. EDIT: Never mind... she got bored and jumped out while I was at the gym. Maybe I'll free up my trap with the lid tonight. --cich
