That seems like a lot. I see them for $3.99 in my area.

I'm lucky and found them for .75 cents at a LFS in NYC. Normal prices are 1.99 -3.99. If you plan on getting 6 or more, see if you can get a discount.

Here in the Chicago area, I can find them for about $2 - $3 from discus breeders, who get them from the wild. I think they just buy them in bulk from lotsofish.com (about $1 each). I actually prefer to get them from Petsmart, which sells them at around $4 each. A little more expensive, but I know the cards have been already been acclimated to fresh water. When breeders get them, they usually keep them in soft, acidic water, where they come from. This makes acclimation a little harder. Some cards may not handle the stress of the transport home and the acclimation to the new water.

I get them for 399 at one lfs, and 2.99 at another. the 2.99 ones are alot larger and better looking than the 3.99 ones.

I've been prcing them out like crazy since I'll be getting a large school in July. What I've found so far is $1-3 for wild caught, $3-5 for captive bred (rare). $3 at my LFS.

Dr.F&S (LiveAquaria.com) has them for about these prices, too.

I was floored when I saw Petsmart's price. Yeah, they call them "jumbo", but a cardinal tetra for $5?

I've been paying around $2.50 to $3, but found them at $2 at one of my favorite LFS.

Acclimating them isn't too bad as long as I don't grab them when they first arrive. I prefer to get the last ones in the bunch. Those have had time to settle and become acclimated to our high 8.0 pH.

So far, I've bought from 3 sources and only had 2 (out of a total of 23) die. One died within hours of bringing it home, and the other died the next day. I have 10 in Q/T right now that are thriving and ready to be put in my main tank.

my store charges $4, but they tend to overcharge a bit for pretty much everything. Its a great store with phenomonal stock, but their prices are too high. (i really wanted a group of sterbai corys, but they want $14 a piece!!) I'm in New Jersey, BTW.
