Discus Spawn. Not 56k friendly.

Just wanted to share the excitement.

My discus suddenly paired and spawned lastnight. I have no idea on what triggered it. Water quality is crap after I removed my fluval 404 and the tank is over crowded.

Foreplay...

Eggs!!

Here is the male fending off the congos.

Female tending the eggs.

Pair again.

I would assume that this is their first attempt and any advice given to this nub on how to induce futre spawns will be much appreciated.

I will be moving the pair to a 20 gallon this weekend, along with the piece of driftwood. Or, I will use a partition to separate the pair from the other fish.

Some of their roomies...

Once in the 20 give them a clay flower pot turned upside down they will love it.. I'm surprised they spawned on DW, normally mine always picked the intake pipe of my canister filter... I did have another pair spawn on a piece of DW though now that I think of it... but I think that was one of their last choices... Good start man

Congrats!!! Very cool setup you've got there!

www.simplydiscus.com is a great site to research discus. You've got a gorgeous pair there, I really hope you're able to raise some nice fry!

A 20 gallon is not big enough for a pair. A 29 is MUCH better.

Good luck!

you took the words out my mouth, thats the first time ever I've seen a person put boxes in the tank for the plecs

Well it won't be hard to induce further spawning now they have paired up and done it once. I used to do a water change to drop the temp from 84 to 80 to imitate the rainy season. As thats when they tend to spawn in the amazon. Plus give them some live food as well for conditioning.

So what's up with that? Are you breeding your plecos? You have some nice ones there! Love plecos. Those look like zebras.. quite a few $$ there.

A 20 gallon is fine. A lot of breeders use them.

The best small size for a breeding pair is a 2ft cube.

I have bred them in a 30X18X18 size tank. But I would not go any smaller than that, and that was borderline if you ask me!

You do realise though, your going to have to be prepared to put a lot of work in! Daily water changes and all that?

Thanks for the input guys.

As expected, the first spawn was a dud. Eggs turned white and were probably eaten by the parents.

Yeah, I am aware that raising discus is a pain in the rear. I heard that they need to be fed with high protein foods few times a day. So, daily water changes is a given.

My friend has a standard 20 gallon tank sitting in his backyard. That is where they will be housed in soon. I just dont have the time to pick it up...or actually, my laziness is a major contributing factor...lol.

I am also setting up a new 60 gallon planted tank with top soil substrate. Maybe I should toss them in there after the tank is stablized instead? Although, I dont think the plants will appreciate the warm water.

We will see...

They sell pleco spawning caves and logs and such on AquaBid.

I've seen some pretty decked-out ones.

Your plecos sure seem to like the ones you're using, Looking4
