Feeding behavior observations

My neon tetras and rams linger at the top of the tank until all food is gone. The bleeding heart tetra "darts" to the surface and returns to the lower portions of the tank so quickly that one can barely see it. This leads me to believe that the neons and rams are captive bred and the bleeding heart is wild caught.

If my assumption/observation is correct I wonder how many generations it takes for the instinctive feeding behavior to disappear? My family is not interested in pursuing this conversation thus you are my only hope LOL.

I think that since the bleeding heart is alone he does not feel comfortable staying on the top like the others that are not alone.

Bleeding Hearts do dart to the top. I have 7 in my 90 and they all do that. My Cardinals tend to stay towards the top while feeding. I think this is pretty much normal feeding behavior. My Cardinals are wild caught, not sure about the BHs.

Good to see the topic was of interest to the Eheim Brigade. I too am a fan of Eheim classics.

It would seem that fish that linger at the surface are more likely to be eaten by predators thus it would be advantageous to spend as little time as possible at the surface of the water.
