Wow. I never thought I'd see THAT but I guess it really was just a matter of time.

Considering how delicate and inbred/hormone-infused normal neons are, I wonder about the hardiness of this long-fin version....

It really depends on who bred them and how they did it

No offense but IMHO those are ugly.Plus i would never buy a fish that was not natural. Also would their swimming be affected?
Each his own though, thanks for showing pictures

there was an article about it in aquarium international i believe. i dunno about hormone induced but in order to get that kind of tail to appear lots of inbreeding did occur. of course they're trying to get stronger bloodlines and the pictures they had in the magazine looked like very healthy veil tailed neons.

this guy looks like a product of inbreeding as his body shape isn't exactly the greatest but it could be malnourished and might looks better after a week or so.

but either way what a great find. i've never seen a veil tailed neon in real life before so i'm still waiting on that. how much did it cost? and where did u get it? anyway i can get my hands on a few of them?

Dave
Most of the commonly available fish in the aquarium trade are not "natural" and barely resemble their wild cousins. Koi have been selectively bred for hundreds of years now. IMO would only really consider hybrids (like parrotfish) and painted/tattooed fish as "unnatural." Via natural selection and adaptation to one's environment, nature has been selectively breeding for certain traits since the dawn of time.

i think it only sucks to alter a fish if u know it hurts their life span. parrots are a brand new fish and i've had a few in my lifetime and from what i've noticed they really do just fine. in fact they do better and compete better then most fish out there. however, i do notice that many (not mine) develop gill problems. the fancy goldfish i do not support because so many of them aren't even fit to live past a year or two. the short body really messes with a fish's bladder and probably so many other organs so i just dont' support the whole short body craze.
