Your favorite angelfish varieties

Hello all,

I am finally ready to add a few Angels to my 55 gallon aquarium, and now I just need to track them down. The Angels I have found locally have been pretty bland, and I may end up ordering them. If I do, I'd like to get some angels that are really eye-catching.

So, what are your favorite angel varieties?

Thanks for posting!

Dave

I LOVE silver zebras because they resemble altums

Personally I have always prefered altums as they don't look so "man made" as all the colored varieties of P. scalare. But I'm an old school purist I guess.

I like both/and. I very much appreciate the "natural" varieties and the natural selection/adaptations that went into shaping the fish.

On the other hand, I also am always fascinated and amazed by the skill of breeders who are able to isolate and fix certain color patterns, so I appreciate domesticated fish as well.

I do draw the line with physical changes that tend to be unhealthy or just very extreme... pygmy "balloon" fish whose spines are too short and their internal organs all smooshed together, and some of the goldfish that have trouble swimming or seeing due to extreme finnage or bubbles under their eyes I really don't care for.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I like all the angel varieties mentioned so far. I also like platinums, and smoky blues...

Koi, marbles, and black lace!! Here's a pic of my black lace. You could see red trim around his eyes. He was gorgeous. Lost him to a mysterious illness that took out my whole tank.

The flash made him look more silvery..in the tank, he looked almost solid black.

a more natural pic..

He had a ton more personality than the koi. I miss him!

If anyone is interested in some angelfish genetics.....Here is the "Bible"

on the Subject......written by the "Mother " of Angelfish genetics

Dr. Joanne Norton. These articles originally ran in FAMA. There are

18 articles altogether. These are the definitive explanations of all the

different phenotypes available.

Here is the link to the first one and at the bottom of each article is a

link to the next.

My absolute favorite is a turquoise angel (technically a blushing black lace) Probably not something you'd be able to find in the average pet store...I also really like smokies or blacks of any sort.

If you're looking to ship, I'd recommend Laurel Mountain Angelfish in Pennsylvania. I've dealt with David before and his fish are the best I have ever seen. A bit pricey, but cheaper than some places, and you more than get what you paid for. Their website is www.qualityangels.com. I no longer have any fish from him, since I had to downsize for a while, but when I start breeding angels again, I am definitely starting with fish from Laurel Mountain.

Thank you all for the variety posts, and also for the Angel sources. I appreciate it!

I'll try to remember to chime back in once I have my angels in-tank.

i think altums look the neatest
but they are very rare and hard to find (unless you live in venezuela or columbia.)

peruvian scalare look similar though and are relatively easy to find on the net.

I'm going to have to say WILD variety, yup, wild is my absolute favorite. I just got 6 small guys (body is about nickel size) wild looking, dark black stripes, red eyes...I could go on hahaha. I need to snap some pics, as they are in their supercute stage. I do like the Marbled, smokey Blue, and White (I have them in the 135. I need to add a pic.... when the youngins sit still.
