Died SAE

Can anyone explain why one of my SAE died after i changed the water??
i did 50% water changed, its not a monthly WC but its because i had 0.25 on ammonia and also 10.0 ppm on phosphate. i know its alot of phosphate but i had 10.0 with 0 ammonia for a week without any dieing fish tho...

i found him dead on the substrate when i was picking up dead leafs while adding new water. its still fresh (flexible) and the color is not pale. my other tetras, rams, ottos and guppies are fine.. but guess what? my guppy just gave another birth...^^

LOL

The exact same thing happened to me yesturday. I did a Sunday maintenance and one of my SAEs died.

The water change kill'em. Maybe its too much or something.

It's probably during the big change (either water condition or temperature like you said) that affected them. They definately seem more sensitive than my mollies.

My mollies are so tough I'm wondering now if I threw them on line, would they just evolve two hands and feet and begs me for more food (like my cousin whom drops by every so often)

Next time we do water changes, I guess just do it slowly. Maybe they can't stand the 50% change like I did.

I had a SAE die after a PWC. No indications of anything prior. Did the WC, then noticed the SAE flop around and do belly rolls....died right when I went to net it out to QT. Water was a little acidic and low on alkilinity, but all other fish were fine including the 3 other SAEs.

Sounds like they may be more sensitive to temp changes than some other fish.

Why would you? Seattle water is probably as cold as BC water straight out of the cold tap.

I do a 50% wc every week with no ill effects
I just add the new water slowly over two hours min. (proper temp aswell)
is it possible you have OTS?
the only sae that died of mine has been from when a tank heater stuck on.
I keep loaches so I have to have great water conditions.

Maybe it is just a coincidence. I have found SAEs can be hard to get acclimated, but they seem to be pretty hard to kill once they get established. Maybe less than ideal tank conditions had it ready to kick off and the waterchange was the final straw.

why use cold tap, it takes me less then 3 minutes to get the tap to a max of 1 degree away from the tank temp. so in a 50% wc thats only .5 degree change, and they are ok with that.

Sorry to hear about your SAE. I should watch out when I do my WC.
