Okay I'll save up for the adults, I wouldn't mind taking care of them that much, but I go to school from 640 and don't get home until 330. But the thing is the 2.5 feet is the whole area so that would only leave 1 foot infront of the tank for me to work with. Would that be okay? I don't no how much space I need infront. But also IF I was able to convince my parents how much would it cost more, not including the tank?
EDIT: What about an octagon tank?

go with the discus, but research and learn as much as you can before you buy them. 4 would work out nicely in a 55 for a while, but once they reach about 5 inches i would give them more space. this would take a couple years. corys, cardinal tetras and rams go together nicely. red tail shark and eels dont belong in a planted tank.

How big an octagon are we talking? An octagon would leave the discus more vertical swimming room, but not that much horizontal unless it were pretty large...

Well I saw one that said 55 but it also say it may be 60-70. I was just asking that because it would have more width

I would think that size would be fine for a pair of adults, as long as it wasn't so heavily planted they have no swimming room.

Would that be better then the regular 55? I don't have a preference, its whatever is better to allow more fish.

I think a 55 would probably give more swimming room in the long run due to the vertical length.
