I have been (slowly) working on a 55g project to house my Endler's livebarers, Otos, Corys and RCS... about a month ago I went with a friend down to San Diego to pick up an aquarium and it came with fish...
She took most of them home but I put two Angels in the 55g (and two Monos in a 20g tall, she was going to take them later but has decided not to, anyone near me want to properly care for two Monos? lol)... The Angels are doing well and I've kind of gotten attached to them even though I was not planning on keeping them. The tank is currently home to the two of them, four female Endlers and two magenta Apple snails, I added a male Endler earlier today and the Altum (I think it's an Altum) quickly ate him. The colors on the Endler's attract the Angels attention more so that was a problem... You can see the tank here: 55g dialup warning Ok, here is the deal. Right now I have this 55g which was originally set up for fish I already have. I also have a 30g tall (24"x12"x24") which is empty and was going to be turned into a vivarium. I would feel bad turning the 55g into an Angel tank since it was bought and set up for my Endlers (etc) but from what I've read that 30g is too small for two fully grown Angels. 1) I could leave the Angels in the 55g and get some fish that would be ok with them and set up the Endlers up in the 30g (or my 20g tall, depending) 2) I could hope to find a good home for the Angels that is near me, preferably someone who keeps Angels 3) I could wedge them (they aren't huge, yet) into a 30g tall set up... I could continue with my thought of waiting for plants to grow in in the 55g and still add my Endlers but I think even with the places to hide the Angels would turn into big fat blobs with "all you can eat babies" and stuff... Like I said, I've grown attached to them but that means I would rather re-home them than sticking them in a small tank and torturing them... I would not want them going to a petstore though. Help? lol |

If you want the angels I would set them up into the 55 gal, and put the endlers into the 30. With the 30 you could house lots and lots of endlers with good maint. and once you reach the levels that you want in endlers you can start feeding the fry to the angels or start selling or giving them away.

Could someone look at my pictures of these guys in the link I posted and help me to ID them? The one I think is an Altum might just be a silver Scalare or something, the guy who had them didn't know (in fact thought the Monos were Angels too...)
Like I said, I would rather re-home them than smoosh them in too small a tank. |

If I could set up a large brackish tank for them I would, they are neat fish. I think I'll send an email to Birch Aquarium down in La Jolla and see if they happen to have a Mono tank... I think these guys would be doomed if I turned them over to the lfs. |

Ok, in the tank I linked to (the 55g) which is currently housing the Angels...
Could I get one more Angel, three Bristlenose plecos, keep the two Apple snails (and add one more) and have some Ameca splendens? I've read that the Ameca can be nippy so I'm afraid of housing them with Angels but thought it would be worth asking about. I had thought about some smaller schooling fish but if they are small enough to bother/eat the Angels will (especially if they have color) but the Angels stick together for the most part which is fine and I have a friend with Amecas. The Amecas are livebarers which would provide some live food for the Angels (right?) but the adults should be big enough to not get too much crud from the Angels? What do you guys think? |

I wouldn't put another angel in the tank, as they can get pretty territorial and could cause a lot of problems for the new one. You could have 3 bristlenose in there if you want, but I would suggest just 2 and hopefully you get a male and female and get some babies. Add the apple snails they won't hurt much.
I would add some type of tetra for a schooling fish. I wouldn't add a livebearer as you would still end up with a bunch in the long run as the angels wouldn't be able to keep up with all the fry. |

Ok, what about the two Angels, two Plecos and about 6 Black Skirt Tetras?
They wouldn't normally be on my list but the friend with the Amecas has some that she would like to not have anymore... Also, would I have too many bottom dwelling fish if I had Corys with the Plecos? Right now I have one Sterbai and one adopted Emerald and would like to get them each two friends of the same type, these two spend almost all their time together but I really prefer to keep Corys in groups. I was originally planning on moving them to the 55g and getting more and having shrimp and Otos for algae, etc... but now I would rather skip shrimp and Otos since the Angels are there. If the black skirts wouldn't work (too nippy or too large...) what would you suggest as far as something the Angels can't munch? heh Thanks a ton for the responses. -Cassie Quote:

Adding another angel will be fine. Just turn the lights off and feed often that day. A small feeding every hour or so. I house 5 angels in my 55g and have bred them in the past. 2 angels is hardly any for a 55g.

3 would be ok, if they don't pair up. if they do the 3rd one will feel the brunt of it all, 5 is one thing, but 3 isn't a good idea unless they start out young.
You could add more cories, shouldn't be much of a problem. I have cories and bns together in all my tanks. Black skirts should be fine, but if it isn't what you want, I wouldn't do it. If you don't mind having fry and part of them surviving get the livebearers. |
