It doesn't seem to be an issue given it's a small 10 gallon. The rasboras and gourami seem to swim everywhere. Actually, I thought gouramis were shy. Mine spends alot of time at the front glass.

I noticed he started eating the brown algae or diatom or mulm or whatever it is that is in my java moss and on my plants. I did some research on this forum and learned this is normal. So now I'm worried he's going to ruin my plants especially if he starts building bubble nests. Wish I knew that before I bought him.

Anyway, my orginal concern was that the gourami would be too aggresive. At least early on he seems more scared of the rasboras than anything else.

I agree with the less is more concept especially with such a small tank. Since you've already ruled out ottos, I'd add a dozen RCS and/or Amano shrimp and that's it.

The reason there was a concern initially is BECAUSE it's a 10 gallon, not despite the fact that it's a 10 gallon. A 10 gallon already is a small space, by getting occupants that prefer different levels, you are reducing the risk of aggression simply due to lack of space. So, if you had a bottom dweller in a 10 gallon, you could also have a mid level and perhaps even a top level type fish. When I still had a 10 gallon community tank I had cories for the bottom of the tank, fancy guppies for mid level and zebra danios for the top. The only time they really interacted was at feeding time and everyone had their space other than that.

As far as your gourami's behavior (you said you thought gouramis are shy) you need to realize that fish are like people or other pets, they're all going to have different personalities and interactions with other fish in the tank. Kissing gouramis can be very aggressive (especially to other kissing gouramis) and two male gouramis can and sometimes will kill each other while fighting for territory.

Your gourami is also a single gourami in the tank. He probably will not build a bubble nest because this is breeding behavior. You don't have a female so he won't be thinking about breeding.

Ah, I get it now. Thanks for the explanation.

my solitary male gourami is constantly building bubble nests, he has his own uber tacky 10 gallon tank with tiki face plant "pots" which are actually dollar store snack cup thingies and a pirate ship and a skeleton pirate to boot...little boys gottas love em!!

He is a friendly little thing though, comes to the glass when he sees me and brushes against my hand and fingers when I am cleaning the tank or feeding him by hand.
when he wa sin the community tank he totally ignored everyone except the other gourami who sadly rammed himself to death on the side of the tank, the other one was the aggressive of the two and I assume he was trying to fight his reflection, the remaining gourami was shy and afraid of the gold ram so he got his own tank which may be shared with some small cleaning crew eventually
