more on buying Apistos-

Well my aquabid experience with Apistodave didn't go so well (didn't have fish listed in Auction), so I ordered some Apistos from Two Fish Guyz. Not sure that has gone any better. Communication appeared to be good via email, but the fish were shipped out standard overnight versus priority indicated; (9 am versus 3 pm) making my arrangements for someone to be home null (I had to be at work and they came as wife was about to have to leave to get hte kids at school) and then there was a substitution made with no prior mention of it (Borelli paraguay for yellow I had ordered). TFG indicated "they" thought the paraguay was better (his yellow were small), but that wasn't what I ordered and I wasn't contacted.

I think I will stick with Petsmart fish if the true fish folks can't seem to get things right.

sorry to hear about that.Makes me want to buy fish locally or travel to surrounding states` shops.I will start asking petland staff if they can still place order for Apistos as thay have done that for me years ago! We`ll see.
If you really think into it this is kind of ridiculous as you werent really seeking anything "that" exotic.And..........i know what you mean about the kid shuffle and all,i have three....

Hmmm....I would take it up with them. The Borelli 'paraguay' is a nice fish too. To me Apisto. borelli is Apisto. borelli.

Sometimes they (as in stores) have to make last minute substitutions when someone is expecting a fish. If it is a different color form of the same fish they tend to do it. It am not saying it is right by any means, but it happens. I would shoot them an email and try to work it out...maybe they can knock a few bucks off your transaction. Trust me...those borelli you have are going to be just as gorgeous as the yellows.

I am going to keep them. Not much I can do now seeing I have the fish in hand. I was just hoping to note for others that from my two experiences that substitutions without notice appears to be quite common with the main Apisto suppliers.

Not concerned about the $ at this point, I was after the yellow form (child's request) and understand the paraguay is more blue, but read a lot depends on the specific fish with different colored A. borelli collected in the same range.

I'll have to wait and see how these turn out. With apistos, juvies and stressed fish tend to be drab colored so it is also difficult to know what you get too even if you try the LFS route (the LFS had some but they were more native colred apistos to start with).

The other pair did seem like the A. hongsloi I did order (no label on them).

Do you have a fish club near you?? We were lucky enough to join a great one (Missouri Aquarium Society) and have had nothing but great experiences.

I bring this up because I have wanted A. borelli for YEARS but refused to buy the skinny, sickly ones I only saw occasionally at the lfs's who pushed oscars for 10 gallons. A member of our club regularly orders fish from select wholesalers and we ordered a trio of borelli (among many others). They arrived in great condition younger than I expected but very nice fish. Our friend notified us as soon as they came in and we dropped by his house and picked them up that afternoon and I ended up getting another pair a week later

I personally have had horrible luck getting the fish I want from lfs's. Many years ago I was sold a pair of rams which turned out to be a pair of green terrors (in my defense many cichlids look the same at 2/3" and stressed ). Maybe if you branch out and try to network with other fish people you will have better luck getting the species you really want?
