I went to two Petcos and a Petsmart and they all only carried Harlequins. Looks like the Hengels at this particular Petco I bought them at was a mistake. They told me they will no longer carry them.
Anyone know where I can get Hengels in MA? I'd like to get 3 more. |

I have a bit of a mystery this morning. Yesterday I went back to the Petco that sold me the Harlequins that I now know are Hengels. I picked up their last Hengel and acclimated him to the tank as usual (2 hours). This morning he is missing! I can't find the bugger anywhere. Any thoughts?
I did notice that he was the only one that was less active and just sitting under a leaf. If he died the others wouldn't eat him would they? I looked outside the tank too but nothing. By the way, my tank is not that heavily planted so I don't think he could be hiding in the plants. |

Yes it's very common for fish to cannibalize dead fish.

Not necessarily. I once had an entire school of 8 black neon tetras disappear within 2 days, and the only trace I ever found was one dead one up in a corner of my tank (I'm pretty sure my synod cat took them out at night while they were sleeping...)

Well, the options that come to mind ATM are:
1) it's hiding successfully 2) it went carpet surfing 3) it's dead but the body is in hiding (in the filter or in plants somewhere) 4) all the other fish ate it If it wasn't looking/behaving normally at the pet store IMO it likely didn't make it...

Hmm...pretty sure 3 rasboras can't completely devour another one overnight. Shrimp and snails can do it quickly, but other fish tend to pick at the carcass unless they are really hungry.
Scenarios 1-3 listed by lauralee are probably more likely. I think Petco has a 14 day return policy. I know Petsmart does so you have some time to locate the carcass if that's the case. |

I bought 57 H. Rasboras when petco was having thier $1 tetra sale........I would lose 1-2 a night for the 2 weeks I had them in my QT tank (30 gallon shrimp tank).........I've ended up with a school of 31 in my 125 gallon discus tank and they don't always stay together. I prefer my Rummynose's more as they never stray from each other...........
