I've kept them over the years, haven't had one in a decade, though.

i've just had 2 in about 2 months ago, but returned the first one last month [because i hadnt had any more tank to fit him in, i thought they can go well with planted tank (stupid mistake, hahahhahaha)] and the second one last week [he growed too fast, outgrown the 5 gal tank]
they were great though, very active if put in a tank alone. . ..

Do they eat plants at all?

I had a normal crayfish for a while, and it turned my tank into a giant salad buffet. I never would have believed how much plant matter one crayfish could eat if I hadn't seen it for myself.

i do think they eat plants, but not that much, just a tiny here and there. . .they jut love to snap everything on their way, plants and fish. . .my big blue yabby almost snapped my glass catfish in to two. .. .luckily he survived and live till today^^. . ..

but let me remind u, some crayfish are plnted tank tolerant, meaning not all of the species love to destroy plants, although mostly do [such as Cherax destructor. . .got the name coz he loves to destroy]. .. .

I bought one for my 10gal both to try something new and to dispose of some old cycle fish I've had for years. He didn't seem to bother the plants any but enjoyed the fish, until my girlfriend found out what I was doing and moved the fish.

had both of them in the past. right now i have a blue lobster left. he just chills in the sump of my filter with his goldfish friend. i find it quite funny cause i put that goldfish that my brother won from a fair and then afterwards i put in the lobster. he never touched the goldfish and my brother's friend brought over a bunch of goldfish that he didn't want anymore (all goldfish are feeders btw) and so i threw them all into the sump and only my brother's goldfish survives. and also no matter how hungry the lobster gets he seems to leave the goldfish alone.

the blue crayfish is a really striking looking fish but the only problem is you can't really have any plants or tankmates for them. same with the lobster so unless u want only that one type in ur tank i suggest not getting them.

my blue lobster likes to dig a lot in the gravel of my 75 gallon. i have an artificial cave with a flat bottom and the third day i got him i could not find him. then i noticed a big space under the cave and saw it pulling the pebbles out from under the cave! then he moved to a clay pot that he dug the gravel out from under. then to another pot and did the same. he now has every hiding place you can think of, two pots, a cave, and a fake log! the only time it has disturbed my plants is when it was digging under a pot, it reached the roots but it did not eat them. one time he tried to eat my chocolate pleco that is about 9" long!!! he could not get the pleco because of its tuff skin.

I had a crayfish in a 10g for a long time. He loved to eat plants (I finally removed all the remaining plants in there and gave him a ton of anacharis, which he chomped through). He outgrew his tank and I gave him to a friend who wanted one. They're cute little guys, and I'd like to keep another one in the future.
