it seems they breed everyday at noon after I feed them flake food. Today the male chased the female for more than an hour and I noticed after each egg they lay the female swims away and the male eats their egg. then either the female returns for more or the male chases her to a spot behind the water heater where they do it. I saved three eggs and put them in a floating nursery.

Flagfish will spawn on substrate, plants whatever is nearby for them to lay eggs.
And will do so everyday. They will eat the eggs until they learn a little parenting skills, but are not very good at keeping care of them. To get eggs and to get them to hatch it is best to put the adults in a 10 gal tank, with temps around 80 to 82 degrees. As soon as the eggs are laid, take the adults out. Use a sponge filter and lower the water about 1/2 way down. The fry are very small and almost clear for awhile. After the egg sacs are used up start feeding with green water every couple of hours. I bred mine in tanks with green water that way they always had something to eat. |
