Could anyone get a pic of their oto stuck to the glass? I want to see how fat their stomachs appear compared to mine. Having a little trouble telling from the side in that pic. Just want to know what constitutes a "fat" belly.
EDIT: Oops, saw the ones on page 1. Anyone else have any "fat" belly pics? |

lauraleellbp: Thanks! I'm so happy they're still doing well! they're such cute little guys!
charpark: Mine don't hang out on the glass a WHOLE lot, at least not where i can easily snap photos of them, but if i see one on the glass and can get the camera out in time, i'll post a pic! But of course if anyone else has one first, please post it! |

Thanks for the photo! oh boy that thing is fat...I think I need to get some algae wafers. I thought mine seemed very healthy, they have somewhat bulging bellies but nothing like that potbelly.
As long as it's not sunken in, would you consider it unhealthy if it has a smaller stomach than plaakapong's? |

No. That one seems obese...looks almost like dropsy, IMO. Probably just a fat oto though. They don't have to be bulging in order to be considered healthy. Basically, as long as the stomach is no thinner than the widest part of the head, they should be fine.

Actually I'm wondering if "he" is a "she"- does that belly look a little yellow to anyone else or is it just me?

I've been wondering if "she" is pregnant? So what's this about yellow?? I don't feed much, algae wafers every other day or so.I tried zuchini and cukes but they didn't seem to go for them. There's only 2 in this 20 and there seems to be algae for them. They're both active and seem happy but the other looks more normal in the belly.

I dunno, I'm not at all 100%- but I sure would keep a close eye out for eggs! If you only have 2, I hope the other is a male? Otos are pretty secretive about their breeding; there was a great article on Otos in the Feb 2008 TFH (I'm pulling from there for the following):
-the more fish involved the better the chances of a successful spawning -doing a PWC and adding cooler water (74-76F) may trigger spawning -need acidic water, preferably 6.2-6.4 pH for the eggs and fry to properly develop -cover the filter intakes with sponges -lots of plants, especially floating plants if the lighting is over 1.5wpg -they typically spawn and attach the sticky eggs to the undersides of leaves -tank needs lots of veggie matter; algae and/or blanched veggies -a grow-out tank for fry is ideal, with a sponge filter, water from the main tank, and lots of algae/veggie matter again -10% daily PWC once the fry are hatched out (eggs typically hatch in about 2 days) to maintain pristine water
