Cories and Sand

Do cories absolutely need sand? What if I were to plant the entire tank so that there wasn't any gravel exposed?

I don't think the cories would be too happy with that, they like to root in the substrate looking for food. Gravel is okay, but need to make sure that it is smooth gravel so as not to do any harm to them. I prefer sand as they are always digging in it.
