Think ambush predator, with a big mouth and a keen intelligence...but they also are a hiding type of fish, they'd rather keep out of the light and even though they are the equivalent to African Gouramis (like Chromides are Asian Cichlids), they rely more on gills than labyrinth organ to obtain air....

I've had mine for close to 2 years now and ones about 6 inches and the other is 4 inches. They grew pretty fast the 1st year. No way they will stay in a 3 gallon long at all, less then a month.
Mine are in a 75 and while they usually hang near the driftwood they also swim all over the tank looking for food. I wouldn't keep 2 in less then a 20 long. One of mine will eat flake but the other won't. They both love earthworms, bloodworms, freeze dried shrimp and cut up raw shrimp, cichlid gold pellets, cichlid food sticks, shrimp pellets, but by far their favorite is live ( rosy reds and convict fry). They love a heavily planted tank with lots of hiding places. I usually find mine under my big piece of driftwood or in between the stems of my plants. |

I have been fond of these fish since I first started keeping fish. I've never seen these around here before but I found a tankful at the wallmart and bought the 6 most healthy looking individuals. They definitely are a shy predator
and don't eat flakes yet... From what I know they grow pretty big for a gourami (giants excluded) so I'm just setting up my 90 gallon for them. Another neat fish that might suit your needs in such a small tank are honey gourami's. They stay real small, bout an inch. |
