this was sold to me as a "Flying Fox Tetra" ... upon further research, i think it is a SAE:

yeah, that's definitely a flying fox. they're great fish, although mine doesn't seem to eat all that much algae. i had two of them that got along great until i moved last week, the bigger one jumped out of the container i was transporting them in and died before i noticed. i don't think i have ever been so sad over a fish dying.

No, that's most definitely not a flying fox. It's a Siamese flying fox, better known as a Siamese algae eater, as quilaho suspected and Wasserpest confirmed.

Flying fox = Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus
SAE = Crossocheilus siamensis

I know this article has been posted somewhere before, but its a good one to keep bringing up. I would also confirm the fish in question as an SAE.

yep, i AM mistaken. i read CHINESE algae eater instead of SIAMESE algae eater. i was not making the distinction between the two flying fox species simply because so many LFS's don't either. mine has the red around the fins, making him Epalzeorhynchos Kalopterus. i should read more carefully.
