My poor Neons :(

Sunday Mstars30 and I went on a hunt for Neon Tetras. I wanted to complete my school of them of which I had 8 so far, the tank has been up and going for ~3 months now. Haven't lost a fish that wasn't sick to begin with yet. (Its so hard sometimes to tell which ones are sick in the bag you bring home from the fish store) So I bought a larger group of them. 10 to be exact. Maybe it was too many, but I didn't think so, after having bought 6 Corys a few weeks ago and none of them showed ANY ill signs after being released into the tank.

So yesterday morning I went to work, but didn't really check on the fish because the timer hadn't clicked the light on yet. When I got home, I was expecting to see my rather large school of them in the tank, but I could only find about 10 of them with any ease. I then started searching through the dense plants on the bottom, looking from every angle, checking the water for floaters... nothing. Then I spotted one stuck to the filter. Must have been that one that looked ultra sick the night before. So I'm still missing like 8 of them. Scoured the entire tank, nothing. Moved a piece of driftwood... 2 stuck to the filter intake. Still missing 6. They are Nowhere to be found. And the biggest fish I have is a Banjo cat thats probably 3.5-4" long. No predators in the tank. Hmm.. so I start looking behind the tank for jumpers. Nothing.

How do you lose ~6 fish?? Seriously. Thats about $13 down the proverbial drain. I think that those fish specifically were pretty stressed to begin with.

Neons are so overbred they have very poor stocks to begin with. that and they are kept in similar conditions to that what feeders are kept in. This makes for a very poor quality fish to be shipped. the last sets of neions I got I lost 4/5 each time. I'm not suprised to hear you had so many losses. I'd reccomend switching to cardinals. they get better care and look the same. Actually better IMO. and will be a moer hearty fish for your tank. Or you can play the neon shuffle and take back the deads for more. Keep doing that untill you have a group that are all alive.

i would classify a banjo cat a a predator....they are known to eat small fish...or whatever fits into their mouths
maybe he develped a tate for neons?
although its more likley that the succumbed for different reasons
is your tank heavily planted....sometimes its hard locating dead fish behind driftwood or in a jungle...
or maybe your cleanup crew did too good of a job

Nah the Banjo isn't big enough to eat even the smallest Neon in my tank... Well... now that I only have one of them.

The cleanup crew definitely did too good of a job, I only saw 2 dead bodies out of all of them. I think they were diseased from the fish store. And they took my healthy core group out with them. I have 1 neon left out of 20 now. I think I'm done with Neons for a while until I can get a Quarantine tank set up. I have 14 fish left, none of them appear sick at all. 1 Lonely Neon, 5 White Clouds, 6 Corys, and 1 Banjo cat.

Always always always always QT your fish. Plants too!

Man, I got some plants from somewhere. It had clado on it. I didn't catch it. Ended up doing a H2O2 treatment and killed off all my anacharis.

Then yesterday, I lost ~15 platys. =/

I think I've got a deal worked out from a local guy on craigslist for a 15 gal QT tank setup. Will be doing that from now on.

I feel your pain..I have a sick neon. he looks to be on his last leg. I got him in April, but it was a freebie from a fish order so god knows how old he was. I got 4 of them as RAOK and this one is on his way out
