I'm pretty sure they eat plants. They are different from the gold apple snails (plant safe) that get golf ball size.

One is golf ball size, the other is softball sized.

Naw, I'm just messing with you.

Canas have deeper grooves (canaliculata, if you will). Go to applesnail.net for excellent details on identification, and everything else about them.

I must have two growing golf ball canas then....

I put them in my plant 'grow-up' tank to eat the algae and because they were cool.

Had not a single plant left in only a couple days! Now they have to stay in a bowl with some cloud minnows and I feed them plants when I have to trim my other tanks.

TAF CAF-- you must have "brigs", not "canas". Gotta love the nicknames huh?

The bigger ones are Pomacea canaliculata and eat live plants. "canas".

The smaller ones (still respectable size) are usually Pomacea bridgesii (I probably misspelled it) and don't eat healthy plants.

And there are several other species you may end up with, cuz really, they all look alike. To add to the confusion, they all come in the same colors--brown, yellow, purple, etc.

I don't think there's any purple canas yet. But there's golden, regular and burgundy canas at least.

But if the apple snail is pink, blue, purple or ivory, it's bridgesii.

Don't know... mine eat live plants... dead plants... healthy plants... and even devoured about a cup full of riccia (I though nothing would eat that). Nothing is safe with them.

My two guys take out a whole leaf of lettuce in less than 5 minutes. I don't think I could feed them enough to not eat my other plants. lol
