Possible gill flukes?

I have a blue ram that has probably been acting differently for at least a week but it has finally progressed to the point where I now realize he probably has a parasite. He initially was brushing up against things on occasion but because I didn't see it regularly, I didn't think much of it. He is now staying in a corner near the surface, gasping.

My question is, does this sound like gill flukes to anyone else? Is there anything external I could possibly use to positively diagnose the disease? I hate to treat the wrong illness. Also, would this be the sort of problem that would require the whole tank to need treatment or should I just transfer him to a quarantine tank? I had hoped by adding a UV sterilizer, illnesses would be few and far between.

He isn't really scratching anymore...now he spends all of his time up near the surface, respirating very quickly. Last night, I thought I possibly could see something mucuous-like trailing from one of his gills but not the other...Anything else I should look for?

Do you know how old your ram is . My male exhibited the same surface gasping, darkened in color and died. They are very short lived. Hope this not the case for your ram.

I love Rams but gave up on them years ago because I too, found they were short lived.
Could be that last stages of Ich, too.

Take a look underneath the gill plates and see if there's anything attached.
