Blood Parrots?

My LFS has this beautiful blood parrot that is not blood colored at all, it looks more like a German Blue rams skinwas put on it and anel fish fins put on it! it is beautiful (not dyed). I kind of want to buy it but.. are they good for small fish community tank?

and is it true they can't shut their mouth? poor freak fish. DO they seem pained or anything by their freaky mutations? i don;t wanna support something like that.
and what type of parrot si this? it looks like thsi but more blueish reflective scales on it..

They can be very aggressive, and reach 6-10 inches in length. I think you would end up with one very pretty fish, and torn up plants

I have never seen a blood parrot over 6".. I had one for 3 years that maxed out at 6" and was not aggresive at any of the other fish except for my pleco. He lived happily with rasbora's and barbs.

Blood parrots are prettyscrwed up genetically, so im not sure that you can make a blanket statement about the size or agressiveness of a hybrid, mutant screwed up fish. Most cichlids are not ideal for the average planted tank, save rams and apistos.

Thumbs up

I have 4 of this guys & from my experience they are not very aggressive as other cichlid. The only thing you have to be keep an eye on is when you put something new in your tank especially small fish like baby SAE they mostly sell nowadays or Otto they would harass them at first (thinking their food ) but after awhile they would let the little fishie alone. Provide alot of cover to give them a sense of security. IMO you should get at least 2 they are not too comfortable alone. And about the Parrot not being able to close its mouth is about half true 2 of my Parrot's can open & close their mouth . If your putting them in a planted tank be sure to get the bigger plants like "swords", Anubias, Vals, Fern & other big leave plants. Small leaved plants like the HM, Micro & even Anacharis have no chance against the Parrot's they seem to be more herbivore than omnivore

I don't think hardness matters alot to them. This specific Parrot you see in my avatar is one of my 2 original fish i bought when i got started w/ fishkeeping. From the very 1st day i set up the tank this 2 parrot's were the first inhabitant, they surived the cycle, the overdose meds & other bobo's that i have done along the way. So as you can imagine they are very hardy, & worth every penny you spend. You will enjoy their personality. Is it obvious that i'm pro parrot.

To me the thought of putting a "parrot cichlid" in a planted tank is nothing short of blasphemy.

The whole idea of a planted tank is to make something that looks more natural. Well how can anything look natural with one of those ridiculous, grotesque genetic hodgepodges in it? If you like this fish because it sort of looks like a ram, then just get rams.

Just my opinion.

don't like mules huh? it is rather unnatural if you ask me.. but it seems that parrot cichlids are going to remain on this planet just like mules.. I read they found a way to inject males and make them fertile.

That's a juvie parrot, when it gets older it will start to change color. Parrots "can" get bigger than you think. I have two, 1 orange and 1 pale yellow, natural colors. I love em . It took them over a month to come out and eat while I was standing in front of the tank, big personality for a fish. What size of tank do you have though? These guys really like to swim and I only recommend them for a larger size tank.

Forgot to add, check out the blood parrot forum, just do a search on yahoo and it will pop up. Before I got my parrots I spent some time on there and it has loads of info if you are considering these guys. Good luck

I had some for quite a while. They died sorta randomly. A couple lived quite a long time, maybe 3-4 years? I had three in a 55 and they were the livers. They would go to one corner of the tank when the TV was on and it looked like they were watching it.

Mine were really peaceful. I didn't have them in a delicately planted tank but they didn't seem to mess anything up. They didn't go crazy trying to spawn like angels will. They may have spawned but it wasn't a big deal and the fish didn't get beat up and look bad. My wife loved them and they are $4 fish so it was win-win.
