I have tried angels, GBR, and tiger barbs to thin them out but they just nip a couple and thats all. So with out having to get anouther bala shark that out grows my tanks what else is a good guppy thinner that wont overgrow??

An adult female albino convict. Wont get to big and wont dig up everything. They are pretty in their own right and are mean as hell.

I'll probably get flamed alive for saying this, but...

Have you tried... a net?

Buying a fish you don't really want just to do your dirty work for you seems to me cruel to the guppies. I, personally, would rather be euthanized all at once rather than chased around by a big scary monster and then eaten alive, but maybe that's just me.

How do you euthanize fish? I've heard of cutting their head off, but couldn't bring myself to doing it. I just let it die of disease which i suspected was turberculosis. No meds showed improvment so thats wut i thought it was.

I know that you can't put a live fish in the toilet and flush them. I don't think just netting them and putting them in the trash would be so painless either... I still don't want to cut their head off. Smashing them with a hammer through a plastic bag? For me that is easier to do. I do not have to see the fish. Putting them in boiling water? That seems kind of painful though. Or will it be instant? I've heard fish don't feel pain but i don't want to let them die slowly.

Hmm... How to euthanize!

How about a leaf fish? They are very nice looking and "will thin the herd".

I'd just net them and drop them off at the local fish store, should be willing to take them off your hands.

For what a LFS would give you in credit and the cost of gas these days, hardly seems worth it.

Blunt force trauma to the head will do it quickly and I've seen it recommended by experts. There are also chemical ways to do it, but that seems complicated. I think boiling water would be good. What is not good is putting them in the freezer or the trash. Both take too long to be considered humane in my opinion.

I don't see any logic in the statement that fish don't feel pain. They have nerves don't they?

I actually have an article in a basspro magazine that states scientific evidence to poove fish do not feel pain. Ill try to find it. It is from 2003 i know for sure.

I don't know "Basspro", but it sounds like it might be biased in a particular direction on the subject. I'd be more comfortable with an article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal (which may in fact be their source).

Just remove the females, since the males are the nicer looking ones.

By placing a fish in a seperate container of water and adding ~1 tbsp of baking soda per cup of water, a fish can be humanely euthanized. Basically, the sodium bicarbonate reacts with the water to create an excess of co2 gass and quicklly asphyxiates the fish, so the fish loses consciousness and then dies. I think I would prefer this method to just tossing a fish in boiling water or squishing its head with a hammer...

sodium bicarbonate (Baking Soda) creates C02 when added to water? Then why cant DIYers eliminate yeast and sugar from the recipe?

Because while it is a prolific reaction, it produces for a very short time... I don't think most people would care to have to replace their bottles' contents every few minutes.
