Did you know that if you purchase GloFish, and breed them, that selling the spawn would be a violation of the Patent held on these fish by their developer? Quite the interesting twist eh? Now patents cover the results of mother natures work of procreation.
I can't believe that!!! How do you patent a living thing? Obviously the main thing on the minds of whoever GM'd these fish was $$$.

But they have evolved a certain way and by genetically modifying them, we're going against nature. That makes me very uncomfortable. I want a natural animal, not something "man-made". I'm in the fish hobby to observe natural species in the comfort of my home.
I couldn't agree more.
Unfortunately, I think in the next few years we're going to see more and more of these GM'd fish in lfs. They will sell, and as new "models" roll off the conveyer belts they'll make up a big part of what's available in this hobby.

They already patent living things....plants! Hostas and other ornamentals of named varieties already have these restictions.

I don't have a problem with the genetic modifation, although I do find it strange to see them sold in pet shops. Most shops aren't doing that well with them from what I've seen because of the price and that they aren't that striking under normal light. I've noticed that many of the pet store grade ones have spinal deformities too, as if they are just lab culls.
