Violet Goby - Gobioides Broussonnetii

This month in TFH they featured one of my favorite fish, the Violet Goby. These are pretty common in the pet stores around here at certain times of the year. It states that they can live in any water from freshwater to fully marine (talk about flexible), but they prefer brackish.
I have had one of those guys in a small 10 ga planted tank for probably about a year now and he is about 8" long or so. I don't have a brackish tank setup and wouldn't be able to set one up without getting rid of my two yellow lab (labidichromis caerulium) cichlids, so that isn't on my "want to do" list. I know I have to move him eventually though, because a 2' long fish doesn't fit in a 10 gallon tank, even if he is eel-like.
Does anyone have more experience with this fish than I do? Anyone have a fully grown 2' long Violet Goby? Do you keep him in brackish or freshwater?
He is one of the coolest freshwater fish that I know of, so I don't want to give him up. If someone has had one grow all the way to adult in a freshwater tank, it would make me feel better.

I am an expert on algae, so ask me if you have questions. I know how to grow it though, not how to get rid of it.

I had about a foot long one in an 80 gallon. Pretty chill. He mostly hid in his cave and would come out at night. Had it in full fresh water, although I've also read that they are brackish...

Kinda liked to dig a bit in the sand to make a burrow. Mostly non-aggressive, except against a pesky betta that flared one too many times in front of him.

So, what happened? Did he finally just croak one day or did you trade him off? I am wondering what their long term success rate is in fresh water or if I will HAVE to move him to brackish to keep him healthy and happy.
