A schooler for me

Here's the deal. I've had a 75 gal, 55 gallon for goldfish and a 10 gallon for trop planted , and a couple 10 gallon QT's up.
The 75 is a plant tank but with goldfish it's a little interesting.
Now i picked up a 29 gallon after quite a bit of convincing bu most of the little tanks must coem down because of the new tank.

Anyway coming from goldfish i like fish that move, constantly. So what is a schooling smallish fish that moves constantly, doesn't look like it's lost (its neon tetra thing i've seen at lfs ) So i want a fish that schools pretty tightly all in one bunch weaving in and out of plants . I have room for a big school to.
I'm planning on 6-10 panda corys(have 6 already)2-5 juli corys (already have 2) 2 dojo loaches(have them) and a pair of albino bristlenose plecos and POSSIBLY my male betta. and it's 75 gallon tank so i'll have room.
The set up is eco complete, 2 xp3's, hydro 300 watt external, GG CO2 set up with ph controler, 260 watt 6700/9325 and driftwood...

I have 3 dozen silver tip tetras in my 100 gallon. They don't school ALL the time, but when they do, it's really cool to see. They're really active fish. JM$.02

Rummynose are the best schoolers, healthy ones are hard to come by.

I agree, they school better than any other fish in the tank.

Yup Rummys are the best schoolers, but they are also pretty delicate fish.

i've heard that they're delicate, but i've never had problems with them... i have some that are 2 years old in a tank at my mothers house. i acclimate them like rams, discus, or cardinals, and try to keep them in relatively soft and very clean water. however, in my experience they're tougher than any of the others mentioned. i had a school of cardinals that was doing fine for over a month, and then one day they started dropping like flies. all parameters were unchanged... i'm thinking internal infection or parasites. oh well. GO RUMMIES!

As everyone above me has noted, it's hard to beat Rummynose tetras. I have all eight that I originally bought in March when I set up my first planted tank (a 40 gal). At any given time no less than 5 are swimming together, with all eight together over half the time. In the same tank I have 14 Cardinals tetras. They just scatter into the plants so that it's mere coincidence if more than five are in the same general vicinity.

I also have 40+ Trigonostigma (Rasbora) hengli that school very well in my 125 gal tank.

all my 36 rasboras school together every time I see them, and they are the only fish in the tank, besides placos

Pufferfreak,

is their alot of open space in your Harlequin tank?

I have 12 in my asian dominated aquarium (400+ litres), they do school but not always and are with several other larger fish (Boesmani and Redline torpedo barbs) and quite densley planted.

I have notice that in tank with lower/ground cover planting and not much high level (or plants right at the back with a larger area of open water seems to make schoolers do schooling better. Even neons/cardinals who often scatter will do this. i guess with lots of open water and little cover makes them feel more vulnerable hence the packing together.

Rummy's do school beautifully but i also think a really large school of Boraras maculatus would be pretty amazing and if you want active you could always go with tiger barbs they are active and always schooling "sort of fighting with each other" they definitely do not make for a boring tank but you have to be careful what you keep with them i have mixed feelings on them i love how active they are and what they look like but hate how much fin nipping they can do but if you keep them in a large group they seem to keep there bickering to themselves mostly

Too bad your tank is a bit on the smaller side, otherwise roselines would work also. Have a school of them right now, and they are awesome. They don't school as well as rummynose (not many fish do in general), but are better than cardinals.
