Breeding Otos?

Anyone have any confirmed reports of Otos breeding in a tank?

I'm asking because early this morning I wanted to make sure that I had lost no more fish. (sad story elsewhere in the forum) and noticed that I had a ton of Otos on the glass. Well I got a flashlight and started counting and noticed some real size differences between fish. I have not added an Oto to this tank for months yet I had some small ones. Also I know that of one type of Oto I had only added 4 and I counted at least 7 of them. And I have a lot more Otos than I can ever remember adding to the tank.

Maybe I'm nuts though.

Gary McDonald, who sometimes posts on this forum, has had multiple breeding Ottos. He's hoping to get some Zebra Ottos and maybe they'll breed too!

It is certainly likely you have had some breeding results. Good for you!

We have a member over at NJAS who seems to breed Otos (and SAEs) regularly.

At least now you won't have to worry about algae taking over, but now you have the dilemma of having to add algae.

I have read that SAE's don't breed in captivity.

From what I have been told, he is doing it. If the guy is at Thursday's meeting, I will ask.

Sweet deal there Rex. Congrats on it.

SAEs have been bred in captivity, but it was induced by hormones if I remember correctly.

I'm trying to locate a pack of zebra otos right now and have my friend on the lookout for some. Hopefully, he can find some for me soon, but we'll see...

Eric,
I got my trio of zebras from Octopus' Garden for $40 (total, not each ). The owner of Family Pets in Fremont said he's seen them on his wholesaler list on occasion, too, but I can't remember exactly how much he said he'd order them for me for. It was less that I paid at OG, though.

Awesome Bill! Thanks for the heads up. I'll call them up and see if they have any in stock or if they can order some for me. If not, then I'll call Aaron up at OG and see if he has any...or if he's in a good enough mood to divulge where he's ordering them from.

I just picked up the stand this week and the tank is going up soon. Just finalizing the fish for the tank, and wanted something different as far as otos are concerned.

On the brighter side, I found some more Puntius denisonii, bringing the amount available to 36.

Oceans in SF has niger ottos. they look like very very small brown plecos. I have a few and think they are cool and you dont see them all that often, in stores that is. They would be cool to have some with some zebras.

Family Pets had a Roseline a while back, but it was $32 and a good 5" long. I was in there this afternoon and they didn't have any otos at all. He did have some plecos though (chocolate, albino bristlenose, clown, and some others I didn't recognize).

Aaron (also the guy's name at Family Pets ) says his wholesale price sheet is faxed to them on Mondays so I'll give him a call and ask him to take a look for availability on the zebra otos as well as the roselines.

I bought a pair of Zebra ottos last Saturday. $ 10.00 each. They were the last two on my LFS. They are larger than the commons ones. I am looking forward for the end of the quarantine when I will add them to my 50h tank.

$20 for two zebra otos was a nice score. Congrats.

And Rex, you have to be doing something incredibly right. Breeding otos- amazing.
