detoxification of NH4,NO2

Hi,i've seen numerous times products advertising their ability to detoxify ammonia and nitrites for example seachem's prime.Can someone explain or direct me somewhere where i can find some more info on this?some explanation would be extremely useful on the changes of ammonia and nitrite at molecular level if this is actually what changes.Thanks in advance
