As I am sure I don't stand alone on this issue, correct plant pronunciation is difficult to find. For me, I know what a plant is when I see the name of it but am not sure if I can correctly pronounce it. Does anyone know if there is a website that pronounces the names of these plants and if not, would it not be a great idea for someone to create a site for audible pronunciation of aquarium plants. I would love to attend some of the conferences that take place every year, but would be scared to death to pronounce any plants to anyone. I can hear them now..."your looking for what plant?"

I love this hobby and want to expand my knowledge of it and want to start by correctly pronouncing the plants we use. I would love someday to be a speaker at an event to share my trials and errors and my successes with the aquarium hobby, but I need to be able to know how these plants are correctly pronounced.

Please share your thoughts...

There less exponsive. I do want to get the Brand CORALIFE that are 50/50 fluoresent with 10,000k daylight and the other half is a true actinic blue light. I love how they make everything glow. So should I just save up For that brand instead? Its like 50$ for an 24inch but I want my plants to thrive and maybe have a few mid advance plants added.

Also do you really have to replace the bulbs once a year and if so what are the factual reasons behind that? Like dose it not give out the certain color tempertures after a year?:help:

One other thing could I buy bulbs from a plant store or hardweare store that work just as well but are cheaper?

as the title states, I found this piece of driftwood when we visit a certain river in our place. It has java moss fully attached to the wood. Brought it home and in the process of soaking it (2 days now).

Question is, is the wood safe for my aquarium? the wood is fully submersed when I found it.

I work in an LFS and just recently the quality of the Pogostemon helferi I have been ordering in has dropped greatly. Not only that but also the quality of those I have used in other tanks also seems to have changed a lot.

Initially up to about 3-4 months ago it was coming in from the suppliers and growing in our tanks very happily looking like this:

In the last few months both the quality of the plants coming in and also the plants which are used in 3 different display tanks seems to have descended to this:

And then even worse to this:

It just seems to get worse and worse in all three tanks, iv never really had trouble growing the stuff before and don’t believe it is a light issue as all the tanks have very bright light over them, pressurised CO2 injection and regular nutrient dosing (weekly and daily.) Is this possibly a seasonable thing or maybe a disease because the plants all seem to get increasingly unhealthy although there is no reason for them to do so. I would maybe think there was something wrong with a tank but this isn’t exactly an isolated occurrence.

Its going to be a smallish tank (no more than 36 inches). But I am not sure what is preferred for the most aquascaping options.... Something tall like a 29 gallon or something deep with a large footprint like a 40 breeder. A cube tank is also an intriguing idea. Anyways, I am curious to hear what shapes/sizes you guys enjoy using.

I have a 55g fish-only aquarium that I am converting to a planted aquarium. I just wanted a low-tech, no CO2 tank. I am using eco-complete substrate and just purchased a 2X54w hagen glo light fixture. I thought I was doing well because it would be ~2wpg. Except now I have learned that with t5ho bulbs that the wpg rule has been thrown out the window (that I have more like 3wpg maybe, but who knows?). Anyway, my tank is 48" long and 19" tall and 12" wide. How can I adjust my lighting using this fixture to be able to grow low-medium light plants without having to use CO2?

I've had suggestions to remove one bulb, will the double light hagen glo unit still turn on with only one bulb in it? Would I then have an acceptable amount of light to serve my purpose?

Someone else suggested to use one actinic and one daylight bulb... how does this decrease the lighting? And wouldn't it make my aquarium look blue?

Any suggestions or info would be great because I am thoroughly confused.

:angryfire

Well, I exaggerated a little bit, but 8/10 died last night. I came home and noticed 2 fish dead (2 black neons), sucked up against the filter. About 30-40 minutes later, I saw a fish that just randomly died (zebrafish). Next thing I know, I look at all my Tiger Barbs and it looks like they are gasping for air, freaking out like they couldn't breathe. I didn't have a bubbler in there, didn't realize that I needed one (my fish tank said it included everything to get started (the filter, food, etc)

What could have possibly caused this? The water has always been clean. I've done 20% water changes about once a week. The only problem that I noticed in the tank was a little bit of algae forming. The tank temperature was moderately warm at 82 degrees.

It was pretty disappointing to just see them all die right infront of me. I tried to pull them out of the tank and put them in a bucket, hoping that would help. It didn't and they all died :icon_mad:

I didn't see any signs of any kind of disease and the fish were well established. It's been about 2 months that they've been in the tank. They kind of stopped eating about 2-3 days ago and I couldn't figure out why, obviously this must be the reason
