I was just curious...what is the significance of pearling? I started with a 10 gallon as my experimental tank...and dont really understand the importance or significance of it. Ive had plants grow and thrive that never pearled at all...and then I had some that pearled like crazy while slowly melting away...so whats the point of it all besides looking cool?

So, kinda an odd question but right now I'm growing my HC and UG emersed in amazonia and am looking at getting a poison dart frog tank... thinking it'd be awesome to have the carpet plant being either HC or UG, preferably UG.

Anyway, the recommended substrate for the frogs is coco fiber and I'm wondering if anyone thinks UG or HC would have a reason to not survive in coco fiber? The frogs shouldn't be a harmful thing to them... but would the frog poop negatively affect them?

Gonna be probably a 20 gallon with a catalina double cfl or a fishneedit t5...

Thanks!
Solid graciously sent me a gift of some white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) propagules that he collected while fishing out in the mangroves in Florida.

They are sprouting! I set them up on some wet paper towel in plastic dish, which I floated in a tank. I think that this was a very good idea for starting them because they are getting light, moisture, oxygen and warmth, and because I didn't have any place else to put them.

This is another to add to my collection of pretty good choices for a brackish riparium setup. I will plant them in a couple of hanging planters. I wish I had the room for another tank, one with brackish water and brackish fish.

I should have provided some object for scale--I always forget to do that--the propagules are about 3/8" long.

I have a newly started 20 gallon long tank that I moved everything into from a std 10 gallon that sprung a leak T-T. Everything is basically DIY except for the actual tank, a power head and an internal filter (that Ill probably be upgrading to an external canister soon). Other than that Ive made everything including a CO2 reactor (copied design from a chinese product on Ebay) that gets pretty close to 100% efficiency. Anyway, 20 gallon long tank (30"x12"x12")and Im running 4x24" 17w (68w total) T8 8000k fluorescent bulbs from 2 electronic ballasts...anyway...I want to know if I will be successful in growing a few plants. Ill list everything again for convenience...

Tank: 20 Gallon Long (30"x12"x12") (1 wk old, 11/18/2009)
Substrate: Activ-Flora/Floralite (should have gotten black, lake gems, or red)
CO2: DIY ~~1 bbs
2x50w heaters
No Ferts (yet, will use API Leaf Zone)
Lighting: 4x24" 17w 8000K T8s
Fauna: 7 Neon Tetras
5 Zebra Danios
3 Otos
2 Black Mystery Snails, 2 Ivory Mystery Snails (poop machines!!)
pH: 7.4
Ammon: --
NOs: -- Im doing water changes every other day because my tank hasnt cycled yet...Im going to change it to weekly in 2 wks probably

Flora: Dwarf Hairgrass (thriving-new growth and spreading already)
Java Moss (thriving-new growth already) so not worried about those 2...
Dwarf Sagittaria (not sure yet, it seems to have gone into shock, some leaves are yellowing but the young growth seems fine)

I want to add some:

Dwarf Baby tears, glossostigma E. and duckweed...will they grow in my current set up? or will i need to go to PCF lighting...prolly a 2x55w set up..

dont want to spend the money if its not needed

thank you all for ANY USEFUL input

As title says, I think I have some nutrient deficiency problem. First some specs: my tank gets 108W of T5HO for 10 hours a day (tank is 75g) CO2 is steady, drop checker shows light green color after 2-3 hours from when the lights turns on.. I use mineralized topsoil, so I didn't dose anything but a little bit of potassium once a week recently. Everything grows fine and look nice except two things-
1. Rotala sp green and rotala indica- it formed a great, healthy bush, but I wanted to shorten it and create a nice shape to it, so I trimmed it aggressively:) Now it hardly grows new leaves and they, as well as few old ones, turn transparent here and there.
2. Dwarf hairgrass was growing very rapidly, but now it grows much slower.

I have a very soft water from the tap, so maybe it's calcium deficiency? I did some research and someone said that when there's not enough calcium, new leaves grow twisted and deformed. While I didn't notice this with rotalas, alternanthera reineckii, which I kept before, used to do that with new leaves.

Is it calcium? If yes, what can I do (escept adding crushed coral to the filter)? Or is it something else?

Thanks for any help.

Riparium Plant-Saintpaulia....African Violet?

There are many plants that can grow using hydroculture methods, which is essentially how our riparium plants are grown. According to a couple of websites, Saintpaulia, AKA African Violet, is one of those. So, I'm trying it to see if that can be true.

There are many plants that can grow using hydroculture methods, which is essentially how our riparium plants are grown. According to a couple of websites, Saintpaulia, AKA African Violet, is one of those. So, I'm trying it to see if that can be true.

This is my wife's African Violet plant after a few months of benign neglect, with dried up flowers, dry soil, but still healthy looking foliage. The first step is to wash off all of the soil from the roots, remembering that this plant has delicate roots. I did this in a 5 gallon bucket with just warmer than room temperature water in it, and it took 3 buckets of water to do it.

This is after the next to last rinsing steps, still some soil in the root ball. And, those roots don't look delicate to me, but maybe they are.

With the plant in a Riparium Supply planter cup. Notice that I nearly filled the cup with little fired clay balls, "Hydroton", which are recommended for best drainage and circulation around the roots. The cap soil is Flourite "dark".

And, with the planter in my 10 gallon experimental riparium. I dunked it below the water for a few seconds, then raised it and secured it.

Now, we wait to see how this works.
