I took all of my VFT to my friends greenhouse today for winter dormancy. Prior to this they have been in my unheated garage at night out of the harder frosts. We have had a mild fall so far and the plants have done really well.

I cleaned off the dead traps and took a few photo's. As I did this I discovered some seedling VFT!! This is a first for me. I sowed the seeds in late August I think-I didn't write it down:icon_cry: They are just beginning to germinate. They look like moss plantlets before they get their first traps. Over all, they are about 1/8-3/16" in diameter right now. I don't know if they will survive winter dormancy or not. I'll find out. I do know it will take 3-4 years before the plants will be big enough to sell in the little 2" square pots, not that I plan on selling any!!

In the following photo's you can notice the traps are much smaller and closer to the soil surface. There are also fewer traps than in the summer.

In the center of this photo you will see a very small green VFT seedling. Most of the leaves look like a grass or moss, but there are two small traps:

Same pot, less zoom:

I pulled a dieing pitcher off of my Sarracenia purpurea today and after I pulled it out, I noticed a VFT seedling that germinated right next to the pitcher. It came along with the leaf.

Here's one with my car key for scale:

I'm new to the scene. I've got a 30 gallon tank with two fire belly toads in it, and an abundance of plants. They're doing well, but during the winter months, I'm trying to increase the humidity to compensate for the forced-heat system in my house. What I've got is a small plexiglass container hanging on the back of the tank with an ultrasonic humidifier in it. It creates that little bit of fog that rolls down the back of the tank. Looks cool, works well. Problem is, I've got two humidifiers, and when they are running, after about 2-3 hours, the water inside get's so hot that I can't even stick my finger in it. I know this isn't normal. At this moment, I'm running just one, to see if that helps. I'll post results. Anyone else had this type of issue?

I brought these two plants indoors tonight to cut out all the dead pitchers and took a few photo's. These plants have only seen light frosts so far. Nothing really hard yet.

Sarracenia Dana's Delight: Photo taken Sept 20, 2009. Plant is in an 8 inch pot and needs a larger pot. It has blown off the picnic table a few times and most pitchers are broken due to this. This plant looks bad, but it really is beautiful if not damaged.

Here it is today. It has really grown in some nice new pitchers.
I have seen several that look amazing, and I would like to :icon_quesMABEY:icon_ques try my hand at them. Since ripariums are pretty new, and their arent any good sites\books out their that I know of (other than hydro's blog!) I have several questions.
1. Are most hardy aquarium plants, hardy rip plants?
2. What are some hardy rip plants?
2. What is a good riparium plant medium, other than Riparium Supply's planting medium which will come out soon?
4. What type of fert's would I use with easy to care for plants?
:bounce:
These are just QUESTIONS! It is not a set deal, so dont expect a jounal soon! Thanks a whole lot! Jake.

Hi..

After following this amazing forum for a while, I am becoming more and more amazed at what one can do with plants and a tank with half water. :)

I first came accross Hydrophytest Blog (http://hydrophytesblog.com/), which is to date one of the best bastions for planted tanks. His photos are well taken and his product is well thought out. A work of art one may say.

I have been trying to find in the UK a product similar to his hanging planter, found only shower cadies that would do the same job, but I am battling with the suction cups. They do stay on, but I am always worried that they will let the planter drop.

What if instead of suction cups, one would use legs? Like a window sill planter, but on a tank?

I have draw a very crude sketch on google sketch, which I have attached to this message to give you an idea of what I am thinking about.

What do you think?
