Ferts
Step 1 Brighty K from ADA (6-7 pumps Monday -Friday)

I have BBA algae issues followed with BGA for a long time now. At the start of the problem, I reduced my lighting to 6 hours. I increased my CO2 a bit (green on my drop checker) I decided to attack the algae head on and got algae terminator (as it was recommended by LFS). And I dosed my tank for about 15 days. The BBA was under control but not killed off. So then I decided to try the 3 day black out with air stone for the BGA. It worked great and got rid of my BGA.

However, my plants suffered. My cuban ludwigias are slowly melting, the leaves of my pogostemon stellata are falling off. Rotalas are green (when should be red) with holes in the leaves. The bottom 2/3s of the stem has no leaves. My other stems plants have turned brown and has no leaves at the bottom stem. BBA is all over my glosso and microsword.... Plants dont seem healthy, turning brown, leaves falling off easily, BBA growing on them...

So, I increased the lighting duration to 9 hours thinking they were deprived from the 3 day black out. And now BBA and BGA is returning with a vengence...

I ordered dry ferts, should receive them soon...

In the mean time... Help! I cant seem to figure out a solution. What am I doing wrong?:confused1:

OK, I have looked and looked and can not find out what this is. I would assume it is an algae. I would not call it a 'problem' other than I do not like it, it seems to grow very slowly.

The tank is about six years old, was torn down and redone almost two years ago, which is when this piece of wood was added. The strands are pretty strong, and attached really well to the wood. The strands are not growing anywhere else other than the wood. There are bits of other algae in the tank, nothing that ever has become a problem.

So, I just want to know what it is...I can research what to do with it, but I have no idea what it is!

Picture was taken with a white piece of plastic behind it so it is clearly visible, color is kind of reddish brown, thanks for any help.

Hello all,
Hope someone can help me with my BGA issue. My tank's a 200 Gal plain gravel bottom. It is a low tech set up and i am currently dosing:

- 3% Glutaraldehyde, 10 ml daily
- KNO3, 1/5 tsp daily

The tank has only 128W of T8 on for 6hrs a day, but it gets a fair share of indirect sunlight... so far the only algae i am having trouble with is Bluegreen algae on some Ceratophylum submersum and echinodorus leaves, driftwood and on the substrate as a carpet (around the front and sides, there is no BGA on the back substrate). I do about a 10% water change every other day (basically a BGA clean out), but it keeps coming back.

For flow i have a 400 GPH canister filter and a 500 GPH powerhead. They are mainly aimed to circulate the surface (no splash, only small ripples). 2' tall, 8' long, 20" deep.

I am planning on a 50% water change/BGA clean out and a 3 day blackout. But for the long term improvement:

1) Given i am not injecting CO2, would it be appropriate to add some airstones (or actually an airline w/ small holes running along the substrate) to aerate the bottom; or would it be better to add another powerhead to circulate around the bottom (tank has angels, so they dont really love the current)?

2) increase KNO3?

3) 50% water change every 2 weeks?

4) Any creature to eat this stuff??

Thanks very much in advance!

I've had eco complete as the main substrate mixed with black sand for about 3 months now. Since then there's been an algae problem, mostly the thread-like stuff that trails everywhere. The tank is heavily planted and I admit, I've only recently started getting to grips with the daily dosing. I know the Eco Complete is loaded with nutrients so do I really need to be adding Micro nutrients daily when this stuff is supposed to provide them? Could this possibly be why the algae is so persistent and would it be ok to hold off with the micros for now to see if it had any impact on the algae without harming the plants?

Not sure of the technical term, but, my tank has is starting to become covered in a light green fuzzy algea. (walls, driftwood etc.) I have 260 watts over the tank, which was on a very self indulgent 14 hour light cycle (yes I know lol, I promise no more than 12 hours from now on) which I just cut back to a 7 hour light cycle. I'm a tad concerned that my plants will suffer along with the algea. I'm mainly worried about the HC which was recently planted and hasn't had a chance to fill in yet. My question is this, Is my seven hour light cycle enough of a cut back to help with the algea? should I shorten it even more? if so how much and for how long? I'd like to starve the algea but not my beautiful HC :(

On the bright side, bought 10 glass shrimp today and they imediately started nibbling away :) however I think at this point its more than they can handle.
