Hello, I've started this tiny little 1.76 gallon aquarium/jar.
I'll admit, I'm a complete newb and was initially posting for advice on my usual forum (a rat forum... so... not much help).

Right now, I have java fern and java moss in it (only things I figured I couldn't kill). There's a Marineland Shatterproof heater (keeps temp at 78 F) and an Elite Mini Submergeable filter going.

You can't see in the pic, but the filter's current actually makes the moss on top wave. Is that bad? Also, I have a 60 watt desk lamp... and that's it. How many hours should I keep it on? Is the lamp too strong? Also, I ordered two moss balls, but then I read that they were like "animals", so does that mean I have to had cycled the jar/aquarium before I can put them in?! Help?

Thanks in advance.

I've ordered 2 plants, dwarf baby tears (HC) and dwarf hair grass. I'd like to use the dwarf hair grass as a background plant and hopefully it'll grow nice and tall to cover the back of my 2.5 gallon tank. The HC will be used as a foreground plant. both plants will be here tomorrow and I'll be growing them immersed for probably 2 weeks so that the HC can develop a nice root system. Eventually however I will have to add water and fill up my nano tank. So my question is about fertilizers. The tank is a 2.5 gallon minibow which will be cycled. It's got a red sea deco art nano filter, a heater, a 15 watt light bulb, and will have DIY CO2. So what should I do for micro and macro ferts? My water is extremely hard to the point that I get calcium deposits on the hood and aquarium decor. Also is my light high enough for these plants? I have flourite for my substrate (biggest pain to wash). Thanks for your help! I've been reading up and tried the calculator to determine how much powdered ferts to add but I'm still a bit lost!

I bought some more gravel for Bronson's tank as what it came with ( it was secondhand £8 from a car boot sale ) was not enough and plants kept floating uo to the surface.

I also read in another thread in the aquascaping section that Quartz is safe for aquaria so I dug out a few of my clear points and a couple of pieces of snow quartz, washed them in very hot water several times and added them . I think they go well with the black gravel ^___^

I re-arranged a few plants and added some cuttings of Cabomba from the 30 gal in my room as it was getting stupidly long and needed a trim.

Tank is a 5 gal Aquastart 320 and contains 1 Plakat betta named Bronson ( he is as violent as his human namesake) , and 4 shrimp ( 2 cherries, 1 bee and 1 CRS )

The shrimp are really loving the new layout and are all over the mossball like a rash ( I switched it in from another tank )

Hey everyone!!

Well I'm new to the forum but not new to aquariums. I have been in saltwater for a few years and have enjoyed it thoroughly (well, I'm still enjoying it, scratch the past tense). For the time being I've decided to set up a little FW planted tank instead of upgrading my 29g reef to a 40g breeder (that plan is still in the works, it just needs...more planning. and more money). This tank will go on my desk so I have something in my room to look at (get distracted by). I'm going for the more aesthetic look, something that is calming. So the Iwagumi style tanks came to mind, and that is what I'm trying to shoot for. I have a few buddies that are into these style planted tanks and I have them for reference too. Thought I would post my adventure on here... Here is a list of equipment that I plan on using:

tank: ADA Mini S (roughly 3.5g)
31cm x 18cm x 24cm

filtration: Azoo palm filter, rated for 5-10g. Since this is a small tank, I thought that shelling out 50+ for a canister filter was pointless. Just something with a sponge will suffice, I hope. It's actually not that bad looking. If all else fails and it's a really bad eyesore, I could try to hide it with some plants.

lighting: haven't really figured this one out...I've heard that a high rated desk lamps work okay. Something along the lines of 20-25 watts. I might make a trip to staples or something and have a looksy. If not I could find a small PC or T5 fixture suitable for this application. (space is a factor keep in mind).

substrate: I have access to eco-complete from a fellow aquarist. I've been contemplating if I could do something a little more fine grain to make it look...finer? Like a fine amazonia or something. Any ideas?

CO2: A believe a simple DIY CO2 reactor will be okay...I can have it dialed in by the time it is cycled. I want to go with a classy glass diffuser too. I think that would look nice.

So am I doing ok? Am I missing anything? I will update as I make progress!

Requirements ;

Low tech.

Im not getting into CO2--especially not for a 2.5 gallon.

I have a desk lamp with a CF bulb in it--cant remember the wattage right now--equiv to 60w standard bulb, obviously that can be changed-Im even considering one of the mini hood lights.

Substrate is open for suggestions.

Plants have to be low maintenance. I have Excel and Flourish--as well as root tabs if needed. I keep those things for my other tanks.

I have a Red Sea Nano filter ( currently only has a coarse foam pad in it--suggestions for filter media are OK as well. )

I have a 25w heater.

I dont want to have to raise food for the fish or inhabitants. Flakes, pellets, frozen, freeze dried foods are all OK.

Suggestions for plants and critters ? Frogs, shrimp, fish, snails etc.

The tank model is Huey Hong Miracle Baby. 10 gallons.
Right now it has an anubias, and I believe some microsword or some type of crypt. I recently have gone silent in the planted tank world for a few months, its amazing how much I have already forgotten. =(

I need help in choosing more plants for it. Should I add C02 to this tank?
The plants I received were from a friend who had to take down his tank due to too much algae in his 150g.

What should I add? I am really excited for this tank at the moment.
sorry for the horrible picture, its my cell phone and the water was a bit cloudy.

So Over on UKAPs I have decided to enter the pico comp.
Instead of making 3 threads I thought I would simply post them all in one.

so to start with the smallest, Think it is less than 100ml

Name: Gill

Tank Dimensions (Height/Width/Depth): 10 - 6 - 6 - Novelty Light Bulb

Aquascape Name: Forgotten Lair

Hardscape/Materials used: Crushed Slate, Shattered Slate, Powdered Slate, Cotswold Bluff Chippngs, Potting Compost.

Plants: Terrestrial Moss - Grown Emersed in a Bucket for a few Months = Whatever has been growing in it.

Fertilisation: N/A

About the aquascape:
Ok so to say that this one was tideous is an understatment. I do not have steady hands and using Hammer and Chisel was a little precariuos to smash and shatter the slate (Left Over from past Tanks).
I had an idea to carve (Dremmel) more interesting shapes in the Bluff Chippings, but it did not look very good.
As I was shattering the Slate I remembered that the Slate from the Rainbow Crabs Tank(Previuos Owners) was very soft and could be crushed into a Very Very Fine Substrate, so that was the next job using a Hammer.
I decided that I was going to get a pot of HC from PAH but decided against that due to money restraints (So Skint), and Decided to try some of the Moss i have been growing in the Garden.

So with that out of the way here are some pix. There are a lot of them.

Photos:

Moss and Bluff
Carving Bluff

Soft Slate to be crushed into Substrate

End Result

Firstly Adding Some Sand and Pea Gravel as a Base

Added some of the Crushed Slate

On Top of the Sand Mix I added some Potting Compost and then some of the Bluff Chippings.
Onto this I placed a Clump of Moss and Started to Play Around with the Positioning of the Shards of Slate.
This was the worst bit as using tweezers to manouver in such an awkward space was time consuming and tediuos. Once I was happy with the placement I added smaller lumps of slate and stones or support. I basted in a little water to allow things to settle before carrying on any further.

I an Happy with the End Result, but may tinker with it a little.
I used lots of tiny flat peices of shattered slate to create lots of tiny caves and cave entrances within the scape. Which I hope is Visible.
For the final Shoot I will be using my Dad's new Sigma Macro Lens. Just need to learn how to use it, as it is Huge and Bulky.

Hey there,

Just ruminating on how to build a hood for my 2.5g. I have an all-glass tank and managed to get my paws on a cheap Coralife Mini (2x9w).

I know a lot of people prefer to jerry-rig legs onto them, but I have a betta and keep to keep him inside the tank. I have seen the Perfecto acrylic lids that some people sit the light on top of, but I am worried about overheating the tank.

Has anyone devised a way to make a hood for such a setup? My initial plans involve copying the hood-part of my other tanks so that the light fixture can sit on top and I can have a little door for feeding Lou Reed his favorite snacks.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated and I will be sure to take lots of pictures if I figure something out so that anyone else with a similar problem can figure it out from my examples.

Hello :)

I have a 3g planted (wisteria) kritter keeper that I have been trying to cycling desperately for 2 months now. Here is my problem..

all attempts are fishless and with no snails

first attempt:
setup - 3g tank, 14w light, white gravel, DIY sponge filter, heater, 4 large cabomba.
added 1/2 tsp clear ammonia which brought it to about 3ppm. Let it hang out for 3 days, checked again, it had spiked to 8ppm. I let it sit for 3 weeks, checking it every other day, and it remained off the charts. I did a 50% water change which brought it to about 3ppm again, and 4 days later, it spiked back to 8ppm and stayed.

I then did a trial and error method of removing pieces of the tank one by one doing the same procedure above thinking that maybe it was something in the sponge, gravel, etc. that was effecting the ammonia. Eventually I ended with a bare tank, and it STILL kept spiking off the charts.

new setup:
3g tank
14w florescent light
6 small wisteria
coconut cave

I am now at this setup. New tank, new plants with absolutely no signs of decay, new gravel, no filter or heater. I added the ammonia 3 days ago at 3ppm, and it's now, you guessed it, 8ppm+.

Any CLUE what this could be? I am trying very desperately to get my bettas in planted cycled tanks and this is making me want to pull my hair out.. I've talked to many people about my problem and all of them have scratched their heads, as I have. I seem to be defying science here..
