what to run in my 2217

38 gal tank
EI ferts
lots-o-plants (sig pic)
inline co2 reactor

Running this is a 2217 eheim filled with the stuff it came with.

I am planning on upgrading the tank to a custom dimension 55 in a year or so... I was hoping to get the whole thing set up to basicly run the 55 before I get it, to make the change over less dramatic...

What should I run for media? cost saving here is not really important to me.

Whatever is in the 2217 now will suffice. Why do you want to upgrade?

If you don't want to leave well enough alone, I've heard that the Eheim Ehfisubstrat Pro is good. It is costly though.

Look at Seachem Matrix. I have found that it does an amazing job and is the cheap. Get some sponges and a prefilter material and you are set. I cut my own coarse sponges and use the Fluval Prefilter media in my 2215 and am happy with it.

I've seen some pictures showing the Classic filled with the coarse (blue) sponges except for the top one. A fine (white) filter is used there. I don't know if it is advantageous to set it up this way for our use.

I looked at a few posts that used just the blue filter/white filter set up too... I was unsure of it.

Upgrade wasnt exactly what I was thinking... I was thinking whats 'appropriate'. I assumed that these filters are not designed with planted tanks as their main uses. Most 'standard' aquarium items have to be adapted for our use. (for instance, the 2217 is rated for well over 120 gallons, yet I am unsure if it is fit to push my 55 gallon)
