Aquarium Search Disappointment

Hey, everyone. This is my first post. I've been lurking around here for a couple months or so, and am itching to get back into this awesome hobby. I've been especially inspired by all the beautiful planted tanks I've seen posted here.

I'm trying to set up a 40 gallon tank (36x18x12) or (36x18x16) (like what we used to call a breeding tank?) with an internal overflow box with the bulkhead drilled in the upper left corner of the rear panel.

Needless to say, I haven't been able to find any such tank in the SF Bay Area (Alameda County north to Sonoma County). I've already gotten the crazy idea of having rimless glass out of my head and resigned myself to acrylic with euro bracing, but still no luck.

I really want a wide tank (36") with a lot of depth (front to back) to allow for varied plant layers, but don't want a 21" or 24" deep tank that's going to look empty for a year.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Fishtankshop.com does custom tanks. We are supposed to take delivery of ours this coming Sunday. It's a couple months late as they had a problem the first time and then Xmas and the New Year fell in there. You could try them. (FYI glasstanks.com makes their tanks.)

Orlando at Greenleafaquarium is soon making rimless tanks as well. You could also contact him.

I doubt you will find a 40 breeder already drilled. However, you should be able to find an undrilled one at Petsmart or Petco and there are a couple good threads about drilling the hole and making the bulkhead yourself in the DIY forum.

You may be able to possibly find one at a tropical fish wholesaler if you have one near you.One of their old ones or something along those lines.

Have you tried contacting The Aquarium Showroom in San Jose? Here's their website: http://www.theaquariumshowroom.com/index.htm

Thanks for all the replies. Check this out...

I found a manufacturer within driving distance that would fab the 40-gallon breeder (36x18x16) out of acrylic with a rear bulkhead and overflow for $590. The same company makes a non-custom "reef ready" 40-gallon tank (36x15x16) with a left-rear standpipe-type overflow for $205. Guess which one I just ordered?

I hope I don't regret this, but I can't see paying $385 for an extra 3" of front-to-back depth and an internal overflow...

You could buy two of the reef ready tanks, put them one behind the other and have a 30 inch depth, plus some change left over. I doubt that you will regret your decision. Now you can afford a good CO2 system.
