Any updates on how the Tom Mini Rapids Pro is holding up? They say canister filters work best for shrimp tanks due to the multi-stage filtration and bacteria build up. I am interested in purchasing a few of these for my 10 and 20 gallon shrimp tanks.

They're too small for your tank size. Get a 2213 for the 10, 2215 for the 20.

Hm, I was under the impression that they work up to 20 gallon tanks. The Eheim ones are nice. Thanks.

The units are suppose to be rated up to 20 gallons however they would need to have some other water movement. If you had two units on a 20 gallon tank it would work out fine. The Rapids Pro unit seems to handle the 10 gallon tank I have great.

i've had mine for over a year now. i wouldn't recommend it for anything over 10 gallons.

the filter has a tendency to lose a lot of flow unless you clean it often.
i wouldn't recommend it unless you like cleaning the filter every other week.

If you have not already done so remover the red cone shaped flow indicator. That will help with the flow a little. Also set it up like the 501 unit. Foam over the intake inside the unit and bio and carbon on the other side. I have had mine running awhile now with only a little loss of flow.

i've taken the flow indicator out already. i'm only using bio media and a sponge. i haven't tried swapping which side i have them one, but i'll give it a shot.

Seems like placing the sponge on the intake side would increase the frequency of required cleanings. Less surface area on the inside of the sponge would get gunked up faster. This, of course, assumes the sponge is a cylinder with a hole through the middle...the way it is on a 501.

The sponge would have smaller size particles getting trapped onto it since the water would have to go thru the other side with bio media and any other media you would put on that side. The sponge would be the polishing media before it returns to the tank. It would take longer for the sponge to become clogged not faster.

You said intake side, so I thought you meant the side which water enters the canister from the tank; making the inside of the sponge the first thing the water hits. Was gonna say...that doesn't make sense.
