That's just some random stained glass I came across. I wanted something that would glow from the refugium light underneath, but not outglow the tank. I was looking for Amber color, and saw that black swirled stuff. The fireplace look was purely accidental, but a pleasant surprise.

I bought a dresser to use as a stand, but I'm not confident that it will hold so I'm trying something else. I have a stand for another tank laying around in the garage - the length is fine, but the 40 breeder is an inch deeper than the stand on front and back. I found a couple of old shelves that match the color pretty well, and sawed them to fit on top of the stand and make up for the extra couple inches. HOWEVER, they dont cover the length of the tank and there is a gap in the middle.
Anyone think this shouldn't suffice? Also, notice the tank has no middle braces on top or bottom...is this bad?

It would be a very bad idea to use those two boards under the tank, I'm fairly confident it would break (the glass) at some point in the near future...
Just pick up a piece of plywood at the home center and paint the edges black, it would be a lot safer. |

Even though the rim of the tank is the only thing that makes contact ...? I'm probably gonna get plywood anyway just experimenting with what I found around the house today.
EDIT: Probably not the place for ongoing discussions about this, I'll start a diff thread for the issue

The rim of the tank making contact with a solid support is the only viable support the tank has. If you have a nice floor or a significant other, purchase two properly sized pieces of 3/4 plywood and glue them together to make a 1.5 inch thick support. Paint the edge the rest of it while you're at it and do it right.
If you are single and live in a basement, experiment all you want and let us know how it turns out in a couple of months and years. B-) |
