sponge filter

I'm thinking of making my own Sponge filter. I've seen other DIY ones where they take a tube and stick it insdie the sponge then stick an airstone/line down the tube and bam. Done deal.

Can I just make a hold in the middle of the sponge and ONLY use the airstone? what is the purpose of the tube?

The tube is necessary to create a water current, as bubbles move up the tube they pull water up the tube as well. Without the tube you'd have a sponge and bubbles but not a filter.

yeah i also dont think it works for crap lol, i went to walmart, got a 180gph power head 19.99. got a piece of foam from hobbystore for stuffing animals/crafts etc. its 3.00 for 12 by 16 square 2"+ thick. dam payin 6.00 for 1 sponge filter! cut it poked a hole and elchepo sponge filter, this may be to big for your setup?! but works for me, you could put a corner filter and pipe on powerhead. heres a pic
