I don't use airpumps in all my planted tanks. All the fish seem to have enough O2 even I run CO2 24hours and with minimal surface movement. Do your fish go up to the surface early in the morning?
I tried running airpump before but found out that it outgassed CO2 very fast. It practically waste all the CO2 injected if runs all night. pH also increase more than what it was before the light is off. Also it'll take forever for the CO2 to come back to the target. If you really need to run one, just try to set it for an hour only in the middle of the night. I got my tank balance messed up by running it more that 3 hours.
Oh, I don't use pH controller so it might work if you use one.
