air filter = polishing pad?
Hi all, I recently got a fluval 205 for my 29 gal, and I stuffed it with polyester filter floss. I couldnt find a bag of the stuff so I got a pillow that was hypoallergenic and didnt have and anti-fungal or anti smell or anything like that characteristics. My water seems to be cloudy though. I have read that this may be a bacteria bloom while my filter builds up the good bacteria. My question is regarding using a furnace air filter as a polishing pad. I had to go replace the filter for my furnace today, so I got one of those cheap white filter 3 packs (like 2 bucks) but it turns out my super had one waiting for me, so I have this extra filter media that I would like to cut to shape into my fluval...any suggestions/past experience?

They are not made to filter liquids, so my guess would be that you can not use them. It is impossible to say without knowing the exact kind of "cheap white filter 3 pack". They might work just great, or perhaps contain glue or something that turns your tank into a slimy hellhole.

"Throw away" fiberglass air filters aren't such a good idea as they frequently have a sprayed on "dust trap" that 's basically a sticky chemical.

I use Morning Glory Premium Polyester Fiberfil 20 oz. bag from Walmart and it lasts a long time and is cheap. I get it from Wal Mart in the fabric fabric section. I stuff this stuff in my canister filter etc.
They also have 2 inch thick mats which I also use for different applications. Joe
