Anyone have any ideas for a cheap way to make an automatic water top-off system?

2L pop bottle upside down in the water. Ugly, but it works...

I have been thinking about the same thing too, but haven't found anything good...boy, aren't we lazy! It seems allot more complicated than just pouring the water in ourselves. Though, I see how it could be useful if you are dealing with allot of evap or aren't around for a while.

If you have a sump....and we usually don't in this hobby... you can set up a topoff system from a reservoir or tap. Alternatively, a guy in my club setup a system using a lawn sprinkler timer and an over flow to 'change' 5% of his water every day. That would keep your tank topped up. I will be visiting him on Saturday and will get the specifics if you like.

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

It's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot.

That IS an aquascape, it's titled "The Vacant Lot".

You could also check out some reef and marine sites, such as nano-reef.com or reefcentral.com. They have lots of different designs for top offs, some using air pumps and switches. I've got a similar problem in my 10gal reef tank, and i'm going for an old school design...a plastic jug on a stand with a hose out the bottom and a valve! Hey, it'll work, just won't look pretty!
