WOW!!! A titanium heater..!! That's awesome; I have never seen those before. That pretty much makes up for all the concerns about metal toxicty in the aquarium water.

And that spacer is something I had not thought of. Great idea!

The way you put the fittings on the ends without using T-fittings is pretty neat, too. I would not have thought of that, either.

How is the end cap sealed on? What if you have to fiddle with the temperature knob? Is it glued with PVC cement, or just slipped on and sealed with silicone or something like that, so you can remove it if need be?
The cap is sealed on with the normal pvc cement, and the temperature is controlled by that external unit. It has a thermometer on it that sets it to a temp and keeps it there. I really like that heater, I got two of them now. Its called a Via Aqua Titanium and they sell them on Bigalsonline.com

Ahhh... Ok. Thanks. I looked them up on some web pages, and I am surprised - the prices are very reasonable.

Am I the only one to have experienced a glass heater breaking in the tank for no apparent reason?

Since that one time when that happened in one of my tanks all designs of an external heater chamber that relies on an O-ring sealing around the glass of the heater seem unsafe to me.

The Titanium heater maybe a better idea but the O-ring must be high temperature resistant. I've had one of the Titanium heaters malfunction and overheat a tank so I don't particularly trust them either.

Because of the above considerations I think that the best design for an in-line heater chamber is with a compression fitting that goes around the heater cable, not the heater itself. That forces using heaters that have a round cable, and not all of them have a cable like that.
