in-line filter useing a powerhead?

I have an powerhead laying around and I was thinking about building a in-line filter useing the powerhead as the sump. My filter ideas consist of a homemade canister, or just useing a step up in hose diameter as an inline filter. Has anybody heard or seen this or am I on my own?
