Persistent algae since substrate change

I've had eco complete as the main substrate mixed with black sand for about 3 months now. Since then there's been an algae problem, mostly the thread-like stuff that trails everywhere. The tank is heavily planted and I admit, I've only recently started getting to grips with the daily dosing. I know the Eco Complete is loaded with nutrients so do I really need to be adding Micro nutrients daily when this stuff is supposed to provide them? Could this possibly be why the algae is so persistent and would it be ok to hold off with the micros for now to see if it had any impact on the algae without harming the plants?

Nutrients themselves don't cause algae. Your plants need macro and micro nutrients to grow. "Supposed to be providing" sounds like you are not sure exactly what type of nutrients are in your substrate and in what quantity. There is no reason you can't dose your water column too, it gives the plants two sources to draw nutrients from and helps to provide non-limiting amounts of nutrients.

Without further info about your setup i.e. tank size, lighting, photoperiod, filtration, bioload, CO2 or no CO2 it will be hard for anyone to give helpful advice.
