JBJ Bubble Counter Leak

For anyone that is using the JBJ bubble counter, do you notice that if you use pipe dope (pipe compound) between the 1/8" connection of the needle valve and the bubble counter, that there is a leak? I am noticing that there is a very slight (but noticeable with soapy water) leak at this connection. I am wondering if it has something to do with the pipe compound vs. the teflon tape (I am using pipe compound right now)

I have already tightened this down as far as I can with a relatively long wrench, so...

Let me know your thoughts.

Edit: Here is a (blurry) picture showing you where the leak is occurring (Q-Tip is pointing to the joint that is leaking; image is clickable to enlarge).

I had the JBJ bubble counter leak from that same connection as well. What I found that fixed it is if you take the bubble counter off, there is a small lip inside the bottom of the bubble counter. I fitted a small rubber o-ring there and had no more problems with leaks. You might want to try that if you can't get it to seal any other way.

I found some interesting posts from awhile (4 years ago) back.

http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/eq...e-counter.html

It seems that the black-O-ring that I thought goes on the brass cap (the part that the airline tubing goes through) is supposed to go to the bottom between the needle valve and the bubble counter?

However, other posts I have found show that the O-ring is supposed to go at the top (namely, the first picture in this thread)

Also, the last paragraph/picture in this post here:

Thanks for the reply Orlando!

When I purchased my JBJ counter from the seller on eBay and opened it from the plastic packaging, the O-ring was at the top, and not that the bottom, hence I just left it there, assuming it was in the right spot

Edit: So there should be no O-ring between the brass cap and the airline tubing?

Well, removing the O-ring from the brass cap and putting it at the bottom between the bubble counter and the needle valve seems to have fixed it!

Interesting that the O-ring was at the top with the brass cap when I opened the package!

hey i had the same same problem today from jbj bubble counter from ebay, i also assumed that the o ring goes on top. BUT its not just leaking air...its also leaking water! i wonder if its because i filled the counter up full? though i dont think filling it full is even relevant no?

They package it with the o-ring on top so it stays in place.

gogreen... shouldn't matter. If it's too full the liquid would just go out with the gas.

sorry to dig out this thread. But regarding the o-ring in JBJ regulator set , can anyone clarify this if it should be at the top of the bubble counter or bottom ?

I have used it on the top and the bottom with no problems.

I currently have it at the top.
