Trying to find either an online source or from a lfs or big box store. Anyone ever purchased one?

Most pet stores will sell tanks in the 5 gallon range, the fluval spec V is 5 gallons.

That's interesting, I dont recall seeing any tanks that were less than 10g being sold alone... It may be because tanks of that size are marketed towards younger children/inexperienced people that may not know about the nuances of equipment and lighting and just want something all-in-one.
Found this on Amazon:

I bought few standard sized glass 5g at PetCo a few years ago. I haven't looked since to see if they still carry them.

Call your local glass retailer and have them cut and polish some pieces for you. Putting them together isn't very hard. Then you will have a beautiful hand built tank!

My Petco and petsmart have 2.5 gallon all the way to to 75g available as bare tanks... Maybe a hood on some, you might have to ask for them. They're usually in a different aisle then where the tank stands are

Got my 5.5 gallon at petco 3 weeks ago. I am currently having issues tracking down a 2.5 gallon right now.

Just checked my local Petco yesterday. Plenty of 2.5g and 5g tanks on the shelf. If your local Petco does not usually carry them, they can probably order them for you.
