I'm stuck between the 2213, 2215, and 2217. I plan on having a carpet and lots of plants and some rocks. I will also have red cherry, ottos, and neons. What is going to give me the right amount of flow? And why? I plan on adding lily pipes as well and of course a sponge on the intake. Also while I am at it should I get the satellite + or the satellite +PRO ? for high lighting that is.
I used a 2224 on mine which had plenty of flow, which has less flow than a 2215 by just a bit. I think the 2213 would be fine, I may suggest a 2215 just for flexibility, especially if you are thinking about adding inline stuff. I think most would suggest the same, it's a long tank.
A 2217 may sound appealing but lily pipes are a pain for that filter on bigger tanks. On a 12 long, it's going to be really hard to find a set of different diameter pipes that are short enough for a 12 long. The tubing size for a 2213 and 2215 are the same, if my memory is correct so neither makes this issue harder. The 2217 needs a 17mm inflow which are rarely small and short, you can find short 13mm in/outflows for the 2213-2215 more easily.
If you want a very different input, go filterless. This is what I just did with my most recent 20 Long.
But I have Eheim too distributed like so:
15 Gal: 2211
29 Gal: 2213
75 Gal: 2215
Bought a 2217 once for the 75 gal. Put it back in the box. My angels thought they were caught in a storm. so that filter is on stand by for a big big tank.
2213 should be fine. I have a 2213 with lily pipes and a Nag inline diffuser. If you're still unsure, you can put the intake and outtake on either ends to add a little extra circulation. Just make sure there is at least 24" from lip of the tank to your filter
