its an AQ 300 and I've cleaned it and replaced the impeller but it still is just not getting the junk out of the water. Yes I've rinsed the sponges too. Its about 6 years old and for two of those years it sat in the storage building not being used. It used to work really good. I remeber the tank looking really clean before but now 90% of the time it just looks dirty. I change about 5g of water every three days and rinse one of the sponges every time alternating them. I alos daily pick out any dead/floating leaves, hair algae. Its a 38g tank with sand/kitty litter substrate. Fish load is light, 3 apistos, 3 cories, 8 small tetras, and I think 3 ottos still. Right now I'm running 2.5w of lighting and diy yeast co2. The lighting and the co2 will be changed in about a week when I get my regulator. So any suggestions on a new filter? I'm also going to getting a 75g and will use a canister on it.

Maybe something is stirring up the substrate? Kitty Litter can make a real mess if it gets into the water column. As for a new filter take a look at a Rena XP2. I have both the 2 and the 3 and I love them. Not too expensive but they work quite well.

I'll second the Rena Filstar canisters. I have an xp3, its really a dream, and so quiet that sometimes I have to watch the plants for water movement to see if its working.
